How many true standards do our members have?  Cajsa is definitely not weighing in at a whole 12.5 pounds when she's overweight.

So who are the standard boys and girls out there?

Maybe someone in the know could give a good definition of what exactly is a standard or a mini?
My Buelah and Oscy are standards....I think...  Buelah weighs in at about 13 pounds and Oscy at around 15.  I think that Toby would be considered a mini but he is getting awfully rolly polly.  He weighs about 11 pounds (I hope).
I'm not really sure where the cut off is .  Also...what exactly is a tweenie?

My husband...he isn't fat and he isn't skinny...so he decided that he is a tweener.

Och is around 15,,,but not fat...just lots of muscle..so I am wondering if he is a tweener or a standard?

True standards.  Zeke, Zelda, Zack and Twinkie were all true standards.  The weighed between 23-30 lbs.
Our originals were also standards.
Technically the 12 and 13's are standards in this country because they go over the weight limit for the minis. Mini's are 11lbs or under at 12 months of age or older.  But even though it isn't kosher I would think of the 12-16 or so more as tweenies because they probably don't have quite the same build as the standards.

I always thought standards were 16 lbs and up when at the ideal weight and full grown.  Mini's were 11 lbs and under when full grown and at the ideal weight.  Everyone in the middle would be a tweenie!  At least that's my understanding of it...Of course tweenies aren't an official classification so I guess it might be open to interpretation?

I never could understand why a whole group (and a common size!) of doxies were not covered in the show ring. It would make sense if there were a minimum and/or maximum weight set (many breed standards have this) but I've always thought it was odd that a range in the MIDDLE of weights were not shown. I wonder if this is true for any other breed, none that I know of. I believe they are officially a standard at 11 lbs and over, it is just that the typical weight that is shown as a standard runs from about 16 lbs to about 32 or so. (I've seen larger than that in the ring). The lay person has coined the phrase "tweenie", it's not an official size. Maybe Jen can shed some light on why there is a slot of doxies that aren't shown, it is such a common pet size (tweenie). If Hallie were registered properly she would not be shown in the breed ring because she is typically 11.8 -  12 lbs. Thank goodness it doesnt' matter for obedience or other events.

The Parent breed Club (Dachshund Club of America) sets the standard that the AKC goes by.  There have been attempts to revise it again as far as the double dapple and piebalds but that was defeated.  Now there is some discussion about the minis and standards being separate at all shows not just the specialties but nothing about the ones who fall in between the 11-16 lbs.  It says standards start about 16lbs but doesn't say they have to be 16.

Loki weighs between 22.5 and 25lbs.  depending on the time of year.  She really blows up in the winter if we are not careful!

Thanks Merion. It makes perfect sense to allow all sizes (or at least to consider all sizes once in the ring). My Jessie, who was shown in the breed ring, was 24 lbs and she was nice and slim at that weight. I've never understood why a whole range of doxies fall through the cracks.

Rich how much does Sophie weigh now?

Dee Dee,

I think dogs weighing between 11-15lbs make up the biggest part of our breed as a whole. Miniatures are under 11lbs at 12mos of age and standards are *generally* between 16-32lbs. If you have a dog that falls in between it can be shown in the American bred class which is open to ALL dogs (from mini - standard and everything in between) just so long as they were bred here in the US. If the dog is bred and owned by the handler it may be shown in the Bred-By Exhibitor Class dogs in this class can also be any size.  If the handler did not breed the dog and it is from a country other than the US and weighs over 11lbs it must be shown in the open standard class.   Believe it or not there are probably just as many dogs that finish their championships that weigh over 11lbs and under 16 than there are true minis and standards.  Many of the standard dachshunds from long ago weighed about what our tweenies do.

Just think if we were in Europe we could have 3 sizes and 3 coats to show separately.

I had no idea Jen! So lots of so called tweenies finish? I don't recall ever seeing a tweenie in the breed ring but maybe I thought they were minis. That is good to know I'm glad tweenies can finish too! (now how about ILP'd fluffy pound puppies LOL!!!)

Don't they call them something different in Europe (the sizes...something about a rabbit?)

Then there is the Zwerg-teckel aka the Dwarf Dachshund. In Germany dachshunds are classified by the size hole they can enter. Zwerg's should measure no more than 13.8 around the chest and the Kaninchenteckel no more than 11.8 so if you have one 12.8 around the chest maybe it's a tweenie!  LOL
There was a time not too long ago when American miniature had to be 9lbs or less... we had a LOT more tweenies back then

to add another spanner we in OZ follow the Brittish, and I think size comes into it. Oliver and Angus were on paper MIni's but inbetweens. Oliver is about 8 kilo's and is to big for mini adn to small when you put him Roberta

My big, beautiful Archie was 34 lbs.  When we rescued him he weighed 45 lbs, but that was because of an untreated thyroid condition.  At 34 he was at his ideal eight.  It's quite possible he was the largest standard on our message board!

I knew there were a few, but I could't remember how many there were/are.  I'd love a standard boy someday!

Well I guess that makes me a Kaninchenteckel then.

Wow Rich, that Sophie is a little peanut!! I wondered if she stayed that much smaller than Hallie, it sounds like she has. Hallie hovers around 12. She seems small to me after 24 lb Jessie. Stormy and Sophie are quite a pair then! :) I hope we can get them all together one day.

Yes Jeri I think Archie must have been the biggest board doxie so far. He sounded like such a wonderful guy!
