Wednesday night we leave Winston at the Vet and he will have his "Big Boy" surgery on Thursday morning.  They will also check his anal glands, trim his toenails and check out his left eye.  We have noticed the eye looks cloudy (whitish) and I was thinking he may have an infection of some sort (like Casja's had?) or possibly a cataract developing?  Although the Vet said at his age that would be unlikely unless he has a "Juvenile Cataract" which does sometimes occur although some breeds are more prone to that than others; which Doxies are not.  His eye does not bother him, there is no puffiness, redness, or discharge of any type and it does appear he can still see out of it.  So, a few rays would be greatly appreciated for Winston and actually some major rays would help for his Daddy.  Daddy has already stated, "What am I going to do without my Winnie Woo!!!" and "He has never been away from home overnight....I am so worried about him!!"......so daddy will be very lonely until we pick Winnie up on Thursday evening!!!  Winston's blankie with daddy's scent on it will definitely go to the Vet's with him

**UPDATE**+=  Winston is home.  He just can not get comfortable, sitting and looking at us and laying one place and then another and whining a bit.  He is drinking a lot but I assume that is because he has not had any water for a day and a half.  He is trying to poo but nothing is coming out.  Again, I assume that is from not having anything to eat.  Just seems generally uncomfortable and miserable.  We have four days of pain pills that he starts tomorrow.  He can also have something to eat tomorrow.  Thanks again for everyone's well wishes and prayers.  Hopefully tomorrow he will be more comfortable.

I am confused. What is "Big Boy" surgery?
I was guessing he is getting altered, but I have never heard of them spending the night in the hospital.
Anyways, Good Luck Mr. Winston.

cheryl186

Yes, Winston is going to be "Altered".  Our Vet has the policy that for any surgery you drop off the night before between 4-8pm and pick up the next night between 4-8pm.  So daddy really needs some rays because he is going to be very lonely without his boy.  I just may let him borrow Zoe for the night :thumb:

Keeping good thoughts for his surgery !!!  Please let us know when they call you Thursday.  Will be a tough day on both mom and dad, until you get the call !!!

I think it just depends on the vet - for some overnight is standard.  Others let them go home that night.

I'm sure Winston will do fine. His parents, not so sure!
I wonder if the vet has them there the night before so they can be sure they are not given food or drink. That is really the only reason I can think of for them being there the night before the surgery instead of the night after.
We'll be saying prayers for all of you Wednesday night and Thursday.

So Winston, don't let them tell ya that you're going to be "tutored".  That's a big fat lie!  LOL.  Seriously, you won't miss 'em when they're gone.  'Course I've only had girls who get led down the garden path to be spaded.  Rays to you, big boy!

we´re not sure about the time difference to where you are, but want you to know we´ll be rooting for you little guy.  You´re entitled to the very best of snuggles and cuddles and treats (later, when your tummies settled) and knowing your Mummy, you´ll get the best of everything and more.  Take care and no strenuous activity for a while...

Porky had his "big boy" surgery at 6 months and did just fine.  Keep us posted on how Winston does.    Its so hard being away from them overnight, but I'm sure you and your hubby will be just fine.

I missed this Cheryl poor Winston he doesn't sound too happy! How old is he? Did they say anything about his eye? Glad that is over at least that is one surgery that never has to be repeated. Give him a hug for us I hate it when any of the kids here are under the weather.

My neighbor and co-workers dog, Murphy, had his surgery in February. He was like Winston the day they brought him home, but slept well that night and was much better the next day. She did end up getting a cone for him to wear since he wanted to bother his stitches and not leave them alone. He only had 1 or 2 days of pain meds and I don't know if he needed more than 1 day and a half. Hopefully everything will be much better in the morning. (I can't believe he can't eat tonight. They had already fed Schazi a couple of times when I picked her up the day after her surgery). Poor boy must be starving!

Winston just turned 5 this month (I know, I am a bad mommy as I forgot to post his  Birthday :doah:.  Have had so much personal stuff going on, but yet that is another story) About 3:00 a.m. I gave him his Rimadyl pain pill.  He was very uncomfortable and whining (he actually hid under the bed and I coaxed him out with a piece of turkey breast) and his nose was hot so I decided not to wait until this morning for his pill.  He settled right down and slept through the night.  I am home with him today.  So far he seems to be feeling better.  Last night I think he had gas.  He passed it in bed a few times.  Think that was bothering him too.  He has eaten some but not a whole lot and has eaten a few treats.  I know his appetite will pick up.  Right now is laying next to me sleeping.   Zoe has been a good sister and has stayed close to him since he got home.  She knows he is not 100%.  Funny how she just knows and is attentive to her brother.  He does have a slight cataract on his left eye.  They said they will check it out again later this year when he gets his shots in September.  They didn't seem concerned about it.  Apparently it is not very common but does occur in dogs this young.  They called it a "Junior Cataract".  The right eye is clear. I am just trying to keep him comfortable and keep him from licking his stitches which he has only done once or twice so far.  Winston seems to be missing his daddy as they are so close but daddy will see him when he comes home for lunch!

Poor little fellow, snuggling close and sleep with a touch of Rimadyl are bound to be the best medicine.  It´s sweet Zöe looks after him too, Islay is doing the same for Red.  By the time your husband comes home for a peek at lunch he should be feeling brighter - bet YOU need an afternoon nap too after so much intensive caring.  Take care, get better soon!

Such a lucky guy to have you. Sounds like he is on the mend! It's so awful when they have to go through these things but I'm sure they forget it a lot better than we do. That is odd about the cataract but I"ve heard of juvenile ones too Hallie has some going on also but unfortunately neither she or I are considered juvenile anymore! :) Give Winston a hug for us.

Winston is feeling much better today :headbang:  He is eating normally and went potty, so that is good.  I will finish out the other two pain pills I have.  Have been monitoring his activity and will do so for one more day.  Thank you all for all your well wishes.    Continued hugs and prayers to all the other babies out there who are feeling poorly :comfort:

That is great news Cheryl. Spaying and neutering is a tough one because when we take them in, they are feeling great! And you know when you pick them up they won't be feeling so great. Glad this one is behind you and he's doing better!

I have no idea how I missed this.  I'm glad he is feeling better.  Cajsa had/has a callous on her eye although right now it's pretty much gone.  It's just a faint line across the middle of her pupil and doesn't seem to bother her any.  Dr. P couldn't find any reason for it and discussed it with a veterinary ophthalmologist to find out that dachies (as well as a few other breeds) are more likely to develop auto-immune callouses like that.  There really isn't a way to prevent them, but they can be treated with meds as needed.  Since it didn't seem to bother her I'm not worried about the slight line that is left.  However if it gets worse I'll definitely have her in to be treated again.  I was told it wasn't a cataract though.  I'm not really sure how they determined that before treatment but they did.

Here's hoping it doesn't bother your baby boy any more than Cajsa's eye bothers her, which is to say not at all.   Is he feeling frisky yet after his 'Big Boy' surgery?  I saw he was feeling better, but that doesn't mean he's tearing through the house!  (which would not be good until the stitches are out at least!)

April, I was thinking that Winston may have had what Cajsa had but they said it definitely was a cataract.  They "stained" the eye which would tell them if there were any lesions or nicks or cuts.  I am glad that Cajsa's eye is much better and is not bothering her.  Winston's cataract is slight and he can still see through that eye so I am not going to put him through another surgery unless it gets really bad.  Praying that doesn't happen for a long long long time.  He had his last Rimadyl pill this morning and today we do not have to restrict his activities anymore....yea!!!!  His stitches are the dissolving kind and they said it would take 3 to 4 weeks for them to toally dissolve.  So far he has not expressed an interest in licking them, which I am very glad of.  So, I would say my baby is just about back to 100%!!!!  I am so happy :hello2:  Thank you all again for your kind words and support.  This board means the world to me!!

That was the problem with Cajsa.  Her eye didn't show any nicks or scrapes either.  It was perfectly normal in that regard which was why we couldn't figure out why she had a callous there.  The vet ophthalmologist held the answer of it being an autoimmune thing.  I don't remember how a cataract was eliminated as an issue though.  Glad to hear Winston is doing well either way.
