Picture it: Saturday night, a deserted road.  There I am, minding my own business, driving home, when OH NO THE FIVE-OH it is the POLICE and the flashy lights and I am being pulled over.  "Drat!" I say to myself (or possibly it was something a bit more profane).  So the officer had pulled me over for speeding, which I honestly think I wasn't, because I'd already passed the sign indicating that the speed limit was 45, not 35, before he pulled me over, but I suspect his pulling me over might've had as much to do with it being about 2 o'clock in the morning as anything, and he was bored or looking for drunks or both.  In any case, I'd had a very bad day, an afternoon at a funeral, and I was not eager to cap off that kind of day with a nice hefty fine and a besmirchment of my driving record.  So I was polite as possible and said I was sorry but I honestly thought I was in the 45 zone and he asked if I'd been drinking (see?) and I said I had not (true) and that is when he said:

"Do you travel with a pet, ma'am?"

And I said indeed I did, and wondered where that question had come from, until I noticed the beam of his Official Big Police Flashlight shining on Scooter's car seat.  Which, in retrospect, I should wonder how he knew what it was, since most people don't; but for whatever the reason, when I explained/confirmed to him that's what it was, he laughed and laughed and laughed at me, and then gave me my license back and told me to be careful and be on my way.  (!!!)

I am not sure if he was mocking me, or if he was sympathizing with me â€" maybe he, too, has a small brown noodle dog of questionable back and tooth health.  But for whatever reason, Scooter had totally gotten me out of a speeding ticket with his awesome Dachshund Powers, even from a mile away.  WIN.

We too get mocked for having a "pet" seat in our car. We also have a baby seat on the other side (grandson). We are in our 50's. People laugh at our unique family car.
Way to go Scooter. Saved the day again.

Here's my thought-He and his wife have been having a discussion about her getting a car seat for their pet. He has been telling her it was a stupid idea and that NO ONE uses those. Then, probably on the same day, he pulls someone over at 2 in the morning and what does he see, one of those seats in the car. Knowing he was going to have to admit to his wife he was wrong, and, probably, still laughing at what he thinks is the silliness of it, he decides he can't possibly ticket you!
Makes a good story anyway!
I'm glad you didn't get a ticket. We have some officers setting up a speed trap recently right down the street from us. It is at the bottom of a hill! Drives me nuts!!!

Well I have to laugh about my Twinkie angel.  When I had her and it was either fall or early spring I would take her shopping with me, and then when we got to the store, I would sit her on my lap and for a while she would just lay there watching all the people walk by.  She really seemed to love doing that.  That time literally she was on her back her head resting on the window frame(it was down) and this cop comes dashing over to talk about doxies with me and also fuss over her a LOT!!!   I think he had one too but he was getting such a kick of her her sprawled on her back but moving her head to follow the people as they walked past.  Not barking, some tail wagging but she really liked that!!

FYI, when I would go in to shop, she was put in the kennel and that was the only time I did not have van shut and locked up tight.  The front windows were about 1/2 down and the middle sliding windows were also half open so there was no risk of her getting overheated.

When I am on-duty as a volunteer with the local Park Police, I have been known to stop and chat with dachshund owners that I encounter while patrolling various parks and trail systems on bicycle.   The owners always seem a little bit surprised when I stop to talk to them.

This was at the bottom of a hill, too!  What's with that?  It seems unneccessarily tricky.  *frown*  Ah well, hopefully he went online ASAP and bought a car seat for his dog and flowers for his wife, for doubting her.

Aw, that sounds ADORABLE!  I can just picture her sprawling and people-watching all at once!!

I think I'd be surprised, too, at first.  But I'd quickly become pleased to meet another Noodle Dog Owner.  Well, "owner".  Heh.

Hee!  No, why would you know about any sort of car seat, especially the Lookout?   *halo*

And Scooter did look a little smug when I got home to him that night...
