Sandi posted this on Facebook.  I'm sure she and Mark would appreciate our thoughts.

Our Bonnie is now doing what she loved to do the most.....sleep. Our Bonnie is gone and Mark and I are working through putting all her things away and out of sight. It's just too sad to look at her bed and toys and dishes right now. We are now just the two of us with no furry companion. First time in 16 years. We were graced to have Bonnie for the last five years, having rescued her when she was around ten. Our Bonnie came with lot of baggage and two pages of complaints against her from her never-hoomans. Her first years were spent as a breeder dog in a puppymill in the mountains of CA. Then some people bought her and she finally had a home. Not quite. She often cowered under the porch at her never-home. They treated her roughly and were unfeeling and unloving. They didn't even allow her to bark like a dog. When she first did a tentative bark in our home, it sounded rusty. She was not allowed on laps. She would sit beside you but never in your lap and when you put her in your lap, she just quaked like she had done something wrong and would be punished. The last 3 years saw great improvement and when Mommy sat in "Bonnie's Recliner", Bonnie begged to be put in Mommy's lap. She was afraid of men. It took her 2 years to trust Papa that he wasn't going to hurt her. In the last years, Bonnie always saved a bushel full of kissies for her Papa. Never cuddly, she slowly learned to trust and to snuggle....on her own timetable. Our Bonnie is gone and we are incredibly sad but we will always have great memories of our Bonnie Wienerdog aka Bunny aka Wiggle Butt. That girl had the waggliest tail in town. Good bye to our sweet Bun Bun.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Thank you all.  It was a hard thing to do but the right thing.  Now we are empty nesters.  We're going to take a hiatus from pets for awhile.  I feel like a chapter of my life has come to a close.  Thank you, friends.
