I noticed last night that Porky 's belly was hard and he was shaking and whimpering a lot. At first we thought bloats or gastritis since he had just eaten. Our vet had us give him something and told us to observe him closely. Porky seemed better after 4 hearty burl's. LOL!! So we all went to bed. This morning he had the hard belly and acted strange again. I had an inkling it was his back. Then when I checked on him at lunch I saw the bridging of his back,  rock hard tummy and shivers. I went back to work and begged my boss to let me out early. She was super nice and told me to take any vet appointment they had available.  We got in at 4:45 and got some bad news. Porky has either a pinched nerve or herniated disc. So its crate rest and Rimadyl for at least 10 days. If he gets worse,  I am to rush him in a.s.a.p. Our vet was impressed that I caught the pain signals this early and said that Porky either has a high pain tolerance or the pain hasn't gotten severe yet. I am resisting the urge to cuddle my sweet boy on my lap. :( He is resting well now and whimpers off and on. We are hoping we can avoid surgery and that the rest helps remedy the situation.

You are one observant mom.  Sammie Angel went through the same thing and was OK after 10 days of crate rest, but it broke my heart to see him there, especially since I couldn't stay home with him, but I left the TV on PBS and he enjoyed watching Sesame Street and Wishbone.  Rays coming Porky's way from us.

Poor Porky, he's one lucky little fellow to have such an observant Mom. I sure hope he gets feeling better soon.

Poor Porky Pie.  Can't catch a break.  Good for you, Mom, for being observant.  Rays to Porky that it's just a pinch and not a full blown back issue.  Snuggles to the sweetest little dachsie.
Mommy to the sweetest Bon Bon!

Mike

Rays coming for Porky.   :ambulance:  Sure hate to see someone going through this.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Porky's a hard luck little fellow, but tough. We're pulling for him.
Good on mom for catching this early.

Well done Mummy for spotting this so early.  Poor little fellow.  We hope it is all cured with crate rest and Porky is feeling more comfortable as quickly as possible.

PORKY!

get well quick buddy!

Barb

so glad you got him in there....... rest, rest, rest, is the key.  A suggestion - keep him on leash when taking out to potty, so when he starts feeling better, he doesn't take off.  Also, don't be surprised if the crate rest is longer......  and sending tons and tons of Rayz for Porky !!!!  Please keep us posted.......

Sending a ton of HHHHHH's  :comfort: and PPPPP's  for our buddy Porky.

I know the crate rest is no fun but it is very necessary.   Zack had an issue when he was about 5 or 6 and we did crate rest and steroids and aside from the weak right rear leg when he was 16-17 it never came back.

Good Luck to you all!!!!

Porky does seem to feel better,  but we are seeing some gait issues and some weakness in the legs. He is in his crate a lot, only getting out long enough to potty or eat. He seems to be in a lot less pain. It is looking like we will need to get more medication Monday and probably have longer crate rest. Our local health food store lady stayed open a little late so I could pick up some coconut milk yogurt for Porky since the medicine is hard on his tummy. She even made us this bath paste stuff to rub gently on his back and have him soak in. We are confirming with our vet that its okay to try before we use it!! She said she made it for Dr. Wilson's own dog before.    :dontknow: She assured menothing in it would harm him even if he samples the bath water. Lol!  We were bumped down one half a pill on Saturday,  but got put back on the half pill twice daily again today after seeing some pain symptoms increase. I think the crate rest is harder on me than Porky. Porky is pretty content in there except at night. He'd much rather sleep in his dog bed. We were very naughty and snuck in 20 minutes of cuddle time on the couch today. Other than that we have been following every instruction to the letter. Porky gets to try a swim tomorrow for some exercise.  :apls:
