I am new to this forum, and what I can see it seems to be a great Doxie community..

My little girl Rowdy is going to be 4 at the end of April. She is currently Bloated ( not normal ) and as of this evening she has been belching a bit..  :dontknow:
My best friend is my vet tech, I have fallowed her instructions.. Rowdy eats very unpleasant things quite often, I am really hoping that she hasn't snacked on something that could hurt her..

Any Ideas?    I am currently in a town that is a "Blue Light Town" SC.. Sunday's everything shuts down..

Bloating is extremely dangerous for dogs there is not much you can do at home for it if it is a true bloat you only have a couple of hours to get her to a vet for emergency surgery.Bloat will kill a dog quick. Hopefully it is not a true bloat I would with hold food for 24 hours just letting her have water give her tummy a chance to rest. As far as her eating stuff she should not you need to teach her these two commands which may save her life Drop It and Leave It you have to be right on top of her all the time if you can not watch her it would be best to crate her until she out grows some of her chewing behaviors. If you think Drop It and Leave it will not work while out on two different walks with my Long Haired Dachshund Patches she was going to pick up a very smashed very dead frog told her to Leave it and she did.The other time was she picked up a chicken bone made her drop it.Both my dogs know from puppy hood Mom will take anything out of their mouths at anytime any place.Oh my other dog is a 90# Black & Rust Doberman I will take anything out of his mouth also.Good Luck with your baby.Welcome to Wiener writings from Oklahoma Papbouv,Patches the long haired Red Dachshund, & Buddy (Doberman) he is a honorary Dachshund.

Welcome to the forum! I'm in SC, also, and I think I'm one of the few, at least the only that posts on here. You are right about it being a great doxie community. Where are you located? We do have an emergency vet here in Greenville, but that won't help a whole lot if you are on the other side of the state. Some of the other larger cities may have one. Hopefully, she is feeling better this evening.

I have done the "drop it - leave it" commands with her. But she is a spite, If I go to take it out of her mouth she just will swallow it, She is my eternal 2 yr old!.. She doesn't chew on anything inside the house she isn't supposed too, that was fixed in Puppy hood, But if she is out side and she finds a "snack", she won't hesitate to eat it - epically if she's the one that Left it there.

She did how ever finally lose some of the bloat this morning after having her food and now as i feel her tummy it is a lot softer and the rest seems to feel as if she is just heavy set..

I am currently in a small town about 1 half hours away from Myrtle Beach SC. Before living here we were in an Apt in GA where I walked her every day twice to 3 times a day, But here in SC we have a large backyard and she is finding all kinds of things.. She is "Dora the explorer"    I think once I get her home back to Tx, into our back yard I know whats there,  she'll be fine.

Texanbell

And thank you Teresa for the welcome!

BonniesMom

Welcome!

One thing I might add, due to very recent experience.  Check her stool for worms.  Recently, our Bonnie was feeling poorly and we took her to the vet.  Because she had also just jumped off our new bed onto the new laminate floor and slid and yipped, I thought she may have hurt her leg or back.  $500 later after blood work, x-rays and such, she came home with a clean bill of health.  Still her tummy seemed tight and she seemed lethargic.  After a walk with hubby soon after, Mark came home and announced that Bonnie had worms and then described them.  The vet hadn't even done a fecal check!  Now, after the wormer, she's feeling good again and the tummy is soft.

Anyway, I'm Sandi. Mark and I are owned by our rescue (at 10 years old) b/t smoothie, Bonnie.  She is now 13.  She is so sweet EXCEPT on walks around our MHPark.  She thinks she OWNS EVERYTHING and is quite embarrassing when other dogs walk down HER street.    :nana:

We'd love to see a picture of Rowdy!

My Parker is also an explorer in the back yard and will eat anything - birds, worms, bugs.
We have to watch him very carefully in the Spring because the ducks seem to think our swimming pool is a pond, and swim in the pool and crap on the deck. I'm pretty sure Parker ate it once and we ended up at the emergency clinic - gas, vommitting, diareah, etc. etc. $1,200.00 later he was all fixed up.  Now we have a tight safety cover on the pool when it's closed where the water runs through it and not sit on top. The ducks bypassed us last spring.
Welcome to the board.
I am owned by a 10 lb doxie. His name is Parker and he is about 4 years old.

Texanbell

Thank you! Hah Parker sounds like he's enjoy hanging out with my Rowdy girl!  I thought I had posted a photo of my girl but it didn't show up.. I'll try again.

The picture above is of her last year during summer and she was shaved down. She is a Piebald Dapple mix with silver undercoat and ticking. when she has her long locks she is dappled with black and tan with silver highlights. Oh and she's a long haired Dachshund

Have a question since it is March and it has already been in the 80's here in Tulsa I have been thinking about shaving Patches she is a long hair red she had a few dapples when a pup but they seem to have disappeared when she got older. Sorry I digress did Rowdy's coat texture change when her hair grew back have been curious if that would happen if I shaved her. Thanks for any help.Papbouv

sorry to be so late chiming in....glad the bloating has passed...but it IS very scary !

My kids are scavangers too....and will gulp something down if I tell them to leave it...I have tried...really....

I am owned by 5 doxies and live in Coppell Texas.  Ducks - Oh my gosh...Coppell is in the migratory path of ducks and every year we have a few that swim for a bit.  I chase them off and funny - the dogs can bark like fools at the edge of the pool...and it doesn't faze them at all - yikes !!!

My one experience with bloating..... Rudy went to the vet for something - I don't even remember.  He is a whiner.  They had to mildly sedate him, and I went at lunch to pick him up.  By the time I got him home - 3 minutes later - he was bloating VERY quickly. I hurridly ran back up there and the vet said it was related to the sedation, whining and taking in alot of air.  They gave him something, not sure what, and the air passed....and I left him so they could watch him the rest of the day.. Scary for me, because I could SEE him expanding.....

Anyhoo, look forward to hearing about your baby, and glad all is well !

It did, but it was a softer coat.. I only shave her down once a year, thats cause her hair just grows very slowly.  Her Dapple should show on her undercoat when you shave her down.

papbouv

Thank you for your reply in case I did not say it earlier Rowdy is a very pretty girl.

Texanbell

Coppell! We are right next door to each other!

Rowdy doesn't whine at all really unless there's something she wants or she thinks she is being abused by staying out side.  But I do know if she is in any kind of discomfort or bad pain and I try to touch the area that hurts she will nip or bite at my hands.

Glad to hear your little boy is doing better, that is a very Scary thing to watch!

I am thinking about Fostering other Doxies when I get back to tx

Texanbell

Not a Problem. Sorry It took me so long.  Thank you .. We love her to peaces.
