Thought I would share a few photos of the quilt that I just finished for my mother-in-law.  Dave and I went to see her just before Mother's Day to deliver a fuschia and card and to visit.  Before we left, Mom said that she had a question for me and my first thought was uh-oh, what is going on.....well, she asked me if I would make a quilt for her using embroidered flour sacks (of a variety of flowers) that HER mother had done.  The 50 flour sack squares were all about 12 inches by 12 inches in size, approximately.  She said that I did beautiful work on the quilts that she has seen and received from me so wanted to me to this quilt for her.  I told her that I would be honored to do so.  Mom left the decision of the fabric to use with the squares with me.  So, I visited several fabric stores with the squares in tow to find a fabric that would look wonderful with the squares.  I went with a blended light aqua with a design of flower stems which is just a tiny bit darker than the blended aqua for the "frame" around the embroidered pieces; the backing is a flower design of medium to dark aqua; and the binding is an aqua, light green and white blended design.  The embroidered squares were cut to be an 8 inch x 8 inch square with a frame of fabric that is 3 inches wide around the square to make an 11 inch by 11 inch block.  The finished size of the quilt is 68 inches by 90 inches.  I used 48 of the flour sack squares in the quilt and made a pillow using the same fabric for the remaining 2 flour sack squares using the same design. The quilt is not machine quilted....I hand tied each of the squares.  We will be taking the quilt and pillow to her soon.  She lives out of town.  It has taken me a few months to do this project as I wasn't able to work on it full time and this is one that I took extra time on to complete.  Here are the pics of the finished project......I hope she will be pleased of how it turned out.  So, here are the pics....

Stunning Dee, I recognise the backing fabric.................love the colour. That one will be a family heirloom for certain re the history of the blocks. To think people buy reproduction fabric you used in the blocks. We will require photo's of the recipient with it.

So no QC on this one.

Roberta, I was really quite nervous with this project especially with the history of the blocks and the fact that I did need to size down the flour sack squares.  Will get some pictures.  And, yes, no Doxie QC on this one!  Oh, and I was able to get the Austrailan fabric that I wanted.  You have me hooked on the fabric!

I always love it when quilts have a story behind them and this one is great. The quilt is beautiful and it is obvious you really thought about what would show off the embroidered squares the best. I, too, hope we get to see a picture of the recipient with the quilt.
