Dee Dee and Hallie

Hallie and I had our best day since "the" day. I took her out to my cousins farm with ducks, chickens, rheas, geese, doves, quail, goats, dog, cats, chipmunks, skwerls, etc. I have been trying to take her places with good smells so her nose can get a work out (she loved walking thru the cow pasture at my other cousins farm with horses and cows earlier this week). Usually on our walks since losing her sight she will walk real slow and keep stopping and not want to walk much.  But today she had a ball, she usually kept the same slowish walking pace but was sniffing out things the whole time, a few times when I told her it was OK to, she would break into a trot and even ran across one of the flat pastures with us.  (that did us both a world of good!). She even walked down paths through the woods and checked out all the ferns, etc, and she got to roll in all kinds of bird doo! We just let her, I popped her into the sink before we left and gave her and her harness a good rinsing...it was well worth it to see her so happy. She actually pulled ME all over the place so I let her go where she wanted to explore unless it was near something she could walk into, she did so well that for part of the time I took her off leash and she got to amble about on her own with cousin Cindy and I right there with her but she did just great! We stopped at the dog food store on the way home and she got some treats and went thru the bank drive thru and got a biscuit, now she's snoring in her bed under my feet here. Good day for Hallie grrrl!!    Now we have some friends coming to spend the weekend so she will enjoy that too and yesterday we went to yet another cousins and she got to have a little bit of pizza with us and then a long walk on the trail. I still hate that she went blind but she is sure amazing and adapting very well. Oh and this morning I went inside when we went to the poopatorium and watched and she made it back in up the ramp  and thru the doggie door all by her little self!  :thumb:

I am so happy for you and Hallie!! This actually brought tears to my eyes because I know how much it means to you. We all knew Hallie would adapt, but it was so important for you to see it happen (and the sooner, the better). She looks as if she hasn't a care in the world on that farm! I think I'm most impressed with her getting back in the house from the poopatorium. That lets you know that she is really learning her away around and becoming more comfortable. She deserved every treat she got, plus some!

Thanks Teresa you know I kept thinking about what you said about taking photos of Hallie at the beginning there and I kept thinking ooh I don't know if I can do that again but you were so right once we took the ones at the rock quarry, it's been a lot easier. She still has rough times for sure, she will do real well in different rooms in the house then she'll go through a time in the same rooms, like this morning, where she just seems so disoriented and can't seem to find her way to where she needs to go. But I have seen a lot of improvements too.

You can see in the "what do you mean we can't eat them" picture why a lot of people on our walks think she is a boy doxie.

I echo every sentiment Teresa wrote.  SO happy for you, and for Hallie that you had such a rockin' good day.

We are thrilled to hear about your wonderful country trip - it looks like paradise - and how fantastically well Hallie is coming along, she really is such a clever girlie.  I know things will never be exactly the same, but that doesn´t mean they can´t be enjoyable anyway, well done on the poopatorium trips alone too.

Woohoo!  I was so hoping this day would come, so your mind would believe what we have been praying for - that Hallie would be comfortable in her situation, so you could relax a bit and let her find her way - especially where she would have long flat areas to wander.   :hello2:

I notice Hallie wasn't in the "Emu" photo. What did she think of them?

Dee Dee and Hallie

This morning was the second time she went out to potty, came in on her own and found me in the office here (I was nervously waiting for her) and this time she trotted in to me! (thru her pillow bumpers but still...) We had a huge celebration over that one. She is still adjusting and I still hate this whole thing for her but she really is doing better than I thought she would. I can't get over her good attitude dogs are the most amazing creatures.

Auntie Karen they look like emus but are rheas, Lucille, Sally and Matilda. I keep trying to get my cousin to name one "Dya" (Dya Rhea....)  :angel4: Hallie has seen them before a few times as well as the other critters, she just ignores them or sniffs them if she gets close enough. Yesterday a friend stopped on her way home from the auction with a crate full of baby and adult rabbits, baby turkeys, rats, chickens and a rooster. She brought out one of each to let Hallie sniff as we're trying to focus on her "sniffing enjoyment" and she was so gentle with each one her little ears were pricked up but she just softly touched them with her nose.

Amy let us know if you catch one! I'll bet rhea is on your diet!

LOL Rich that is my cousin...I like to stay behind the camera as much as possible.  :thumb: She really was having a great time I am going to take her back, we have a full week ahead of dog and horse photos though so that will keep her busy.
