We don't have to treat for heartworm here but we are going to "San FranCrisco" next week and there is heartworm there so I have some revolution I plan to put on Hallie on Monday, but now that I am doing my googling and panicking act, I have read that some dogs have gotten heartworms while on Revolution. (I don't treat Hallie for fleas normally either she doesn't get them for some reason).

So I was hoping I could get some input from you guys who use heartworm preventatives, and what you think of Revolution, or what you are using?

Parker uses revolution hearworm med with flea prevention. His  is a topical treatment that I rub on the back of his neck so he can't lick it off. ( wear gloves) I have seen no reaction from him. He gets 7 treatments May to November. Heartworm is very common here in southern Ontario.

Thanks I feel better about using it already!  :thumb: Thanks for the tip on wearing gloves too I wouldn't have thought of that.

We have never used this.  Does it work almost immediately?  What I have used before when travelling to areas with heartworm, has to be given in pill form 30 days before the trip, and the last pill is to cover at least 30 days upon your return home.

The thing I learned when I moved to Michigan is that heartworm treatment is retroactive.  It doesn't do any good to put it on BEFORE exposure to mosquitos, you must put it on after.  The heartworm treatment can be applied up to six weeks after exposure to heartworms and it will kill the microfilaria.

That was what my vet said too, I am to treat her just before we leave, then in 30 days and then again in 30 days to be sure to cover it all. What do you 2 give your kids?

Yes our lot have always been on the heart gard for heartworm as we are in a heartworm area. I do a seperate flea and tick  as we do don't get them  in the winter, plu its the paralytic tick that is the biggest problem

That is what I had my Fred and Jessie on "back in the day"...chewable heartguard, I'm guessing that is the same stuff? I had them on it only because we travelled so far to dog shows and were often in heartworm areas. Paralytic ticks? That sounds like a nightmare! Yikes.

I'm sure I'll be torturing you with pics from our San Fran Crisco trip  :angel4: we're going with some friends and will be watching the Federal Duck stamp judging, I have an entry in. This will be Hallie's first trip to Hallie-fornia!

Yep, I use heartgard too, but I'm going to give the puppies Revolution in a few weeks to cover them.  They've been coming outside since five weeks, so I need to get them before eleven weeks.

Dee Dee and Hallie

OK if they are safe enough for the precious pups, Hallie should do fine!  Thanks Kathleen.
Now I just have to find out if it's ok to apply it on the same day as her allergy shot as it's in the same spot. It's never as easy as it seems it should be LOL~!

Don't know much about heartworm meds but I did want to extend an invite to you.  If you travel just a mere 230 more miles down the highway, you'll reach my house.  You're welcome to drop in if you'd like.

I would love to do that Sandi! I'd really love to see you and Mark and meet Bonnie. I had thought of that and of visiting Julia and kids also but I am travelling with friends and they are driving, and we're going down and back in one day and only staying there 2 days (glad I'm not driving!) so I am stuck without my own wheels. One of these days Hallie and I'd like to do a leisurely trip and visit along the way!

Always used Interceptor and Front line Plus here in Oklahoma where we have it all never really gets cold enough they say to rid us of all the creepy critters.Good luck with your Revolution I would recommend  not doing the allergy shot and Revolution on the same day especially on a dog that is not use to getting it would be better to do them a week apart if you have the time to do so, I give the Heart Worm medication on the 11th and then about a week later do the Frontline plus.Do not want to over whelm there systems.

Dee Dee and Hallie

I've been reading about Interceptor too, sounds like a good one. Unfortunately I don't have time to spread them a week apart her allergy shot is due Monday (tomorrow) and we are leaving 2 days later. I was planning to give her the Revolution Monday so she'd have 2 days before we left to see how it goes but just realized that was her allergy shot day also. I will talk to the vet Monday and see what she thinks, if I have to I'll just have to skip her allergy shot until we get home. That might be the best thing anyway it will only be a week late.
