Hi, Eleanor!  I met you at Nikki's in - was it 2002 or 2003?  I know I was at Ron and Delia's in 2003, but I don't remember if I was at Nikki's that same year or not!  I periodically wonder about you!  It is good to see you posting!  WB!  I think you met my Brekke, so now I have had 3 go to the Bridge, and now I have 3 more.  As always, named for sci-fi books or movies, and my newest three are rescues - Robinton from a family who had big dogs but rescued him from the street, and my other two that were living with a loving family, but in a small apartment with two teens who were there every other week, no yard, and the mom was expecting a baby  - and they had to rehome the husband's dog (not a dachsie) as well.

Oops - I was too busy welcoming Eleanor to see the age part of this thread!
Heidi-Angel was 15 years and 49 weeks, when she was sent to the Bridge, Gretl-Angel was 14 years and 1 month when she passed, Sorcha-Angel was 7 when Robyn took her in, but she had cancer and was sent to the Bridge about 2-3 months after that, and Siglen-Angel drowned at 9 years, 9 months (possibly not an accident).

Brekke is 9 and 2 months, Robinton is 8 or 9, Rowan is 9 years and 6 months, and Bastian is 10 years and 3 months.

Guinness don't rush to be the senior weiner. Although it is an honor to pass your 16th birthday when you are a dachshund, it also comes with some disadvantages. Than again you get to sleep most of the day, so I guess it has some good points too.  Eleanor (Jake is sleeping of course)

Hi! Julia, Sorry to hear all three of your babies have gone to the bridge. I imagine we were at Nikki's in 2002, since by the later half of 2003 I was moving to Georgia. My memory is not very good anymore. I had a Bow-Wow in 2000 in Ingleside, Texas. I liked your quote of Heidi-Angel's age 15 years and 49 weeks. That is the best way to figure it when they get close to 16 years. I remember reading that you lost Siglen-Angel by drowning in an above ground pool, I believe. What makes you think it may not have been an accident? Your three dachsies now are all about the same age bracket. I can't really imagine having three senior dachsies at once. Jake keeps me busy washing floor pads, taking him in and out etc. He still walks but is very slow so I carry him outside. I would say the past year to year and a half Jake has aged much faster. When we were in Brazil together (up until Jan. 2009) he was still talking. I miss that the most. I guess he can't hear himself talk so he just stopped all together.  Eleanor

Madderoos Mom

Hello Eleanor!  Remember me?  I've been here a long time.  The Dachshund Circus was my very first mouse click and my introduction to the Internet back in the day.  As you recall, we had Dolly and Madison.  Now, sadly, the D & M era is over, with us just putting Maddie down just this week.  Now we have Bouncy Bonnie.  She is a rescue of a spry 11 years.  We've had her for 2 years.  She's amazing and now will do well as an only dog.  She is quite alpha and I'm just not up for going through the whole alpha dominance thing with her and another pupper.  She is really sweet but has had a hard past life as a mill dog and then in a home where they (gasp) treated her like a dog.....not a member of the family.  I am somewhat involved with a rescue here on the Central Coast of CA called Foxy Doxy Dachshund Rescue.  Here is their site if you want to check it out...   foxydoxydachshundrescue.com .  Stacey. the leader of the pack, is truly an amazing caring lady who has a BIG job with a lot of little (and some big )charges.  Her adoption rate is very very good.  Anyway, that's it for me!  Glad you stopped in.

Hi! Sandy, Yes I remember you! Sorry to hear you just sent Maderoo to the Rainbow Bridge. How old was she? Congradulations on your work with the rescue group. That would be hard for me not to want to bring all of them home with ME! But I most likely will remain Dog-less after Jake goes on to the bridge. I tend to travel a lot and it gets very hard to find someone you trust to watch them. It's been great to hear from so many of the old timers on the board. It has helped me to judge what stage Jake is at in his aging process. I will not get into all the medications the vet wants to sell just to prolong a dog's life a few more months. The heart medication Jake was given made him worse than his condition was making him. So we went back to the natural method of eating as well as possible and lovingly caring for him in his last years. Eleanor

Well, Eleanor, I was married for almost 4 years, and my husband was not on the up-and-up with me.  When I went to school, I later found out he shoved the dachsies outside.  I didn't really question Siglen's drowning at first, but I have some friends who questioned me closely at the time my annulment was winding up, and even though the cover was halfway off, the power had been shut off to drain the hot tub for over 24 hours, so the water was not hot.  She was by the steps, and there was blood on her mouth.  I had heard her go out the dog door earlier, and I had also heard him go outside.  I did not really question it at the time, but a couple of years later, he mentioned that he felt "haunted" by Siglen and Gretl - so maybe he suffocated Gretl with a pillow, as well as drowning Siglen.  He definitely had issues that resulted in many strange behaviors.

Hi! Dee Dee.   Good to hear from you too. But I have no idea what dachsie bag I sent you. Guess I am getting as old as Jake. Hallie looks as cute as ever. Eleanor

Hi Eleanor, of course I remember you and Jake!  WOW!  Its so good to see you post.  Don't know what you remember about us, but we  have Willy and Alex, they are 12.5 years old.  We lost our rescue Misty Girl three years ago due to a brain aneurysm, she was 6 years old.  We are well, I am retired on disability due to a couple ruptured disks in my neck.  All is well in Alaska.  Neeki, my horse, is 6 years old now.  Dan is doing great.  Please let us know more about what is going on with you.
