A friend of mine in Spokane, WA has been boarding an 8 month old wirehaired doxie female. The owners are not able to keep her and want to place her. They aren't asking any money, just a great home. I believe she came from an animal shelter but I'm not sure. My friend is my old dog training/dog show buddy and knows dogs better than anyone I know. She said the pup, whose name is "Given", (I love the name) has been great with the kids they've ran across on their walks, not shy at all, gets along with no problems both big and small dogs. She is a very rambunctious puppy but does settle nicely when she is being held so she should make a nice therapy dog. She doubts she is registered but will ask the owner. She is all white with a dark head, maybe dark on tail not sure.

Given is 11.5 lbs, eats 1/2 c 2x day Eukanuba mini chunk right now. She is UTD on her shots. And she is spayed. She is adorable and a really unique color. Anyone interested in giving this girl a great forever home please let me know. She's will stay with my friend until she finds the perfect home.

Dee and Dave you need another to add to your pack, don't you???  (totally KIDDING LOL)

Just got back from the vet getting Hallie's allergy shot and the vet said one of her clients just told her today she'd like to get a dachshund...sounds like a great home so hopefully this will work out, fast placement if so!

Phew!  I'm happy to hear that this little girl may have a new forever home!!!  My boys would probably like a little sister but three is enough for me especially with one that is still in the toddler stage!!

Yes I think adding another young'n might just put you over the edge LOL. Thankfully this little girl is fine where she is until she gets her new home so it's not a huge rush like some cases.

That was so nice of you to consider her Kari! So...how close was Drew to saying "yes" ? LOL. Now my friend said she is interviewing 2 people this weekend about Given, if they don't pan out we'll check out the lady here better, if that doesn't pan out she'll be on the market again.

Papbouv I have major doubts I will survive losing Hallie one day and if I do not sure I could do the dog thing again...and if I did not sure I could do a dachshund again with the back problems (and what other breed is there once you have one!). My biggest fear is something happening to me and having to leave a baby behind. With 2 I also couldn't take Hallie all the places I take her would hate to leave one home alone and can only carry one at a time. Plus I think she'd need intensive therapy if she had to share her Mom with anyone on a permanent basis LOL.  :angel4:

You might want to wait until Miss Hallie slows down a lot, and then introduce a new furbaby.  It worked for my sister.  Her dog Gretel is now 15 and last year they rescued a puppy from my vet's here in TN and took her back.  It has worked out well, with Gretel (the 15 year old) and Roxy (who is about the same age as Hilde).  In fact it seems to have help pep up Gretel a little.  Just a thought.

Your sister sounds a lot like you Darcel :) so nice of her to rescue Roxy. That's great she and Gretel get along so well! That worked for my cat once too which surprised the heck out of me, my old Simon boy was 13 when I inherited 16 yr old Sophie from an Aunt who passed...I put Sophie in a separate room and let her and Simon see each other for brief moments for a few days, when I finally let them out together I expected a lot of hissing but they snuggled up and were best of friends from that point on.  Simon made it to 15 and Sophie to 20.

If it weren't for everything going on in Patty's life right now, I think Given would be a perfect fit for her. I'm sure Willy and Alex miss having a little girl around. I must say, she is a beautiful puppy.

I think so too Teresa. Patty had a wonderful wire named Harry who lived to a ripe old age. I'm sure Given would have fit right in with the boys! My friend is interviewing another couple Tuesday that sound really promising for her.

LOL Sue! Sounds like a good t shirt logo!  I stopped at one because I can't afford two poopatoriums...and of course each would have to have their own.  :angel4:

Dee Dee, there is a line of dachshunds out there who is known in show circles for remarkably healthy backs, if you ever do decide to get a dachshund again.  The kennel name is "Sleepytime's".   I want to say they're out of Ohio, but am not 100% sure of that.

Julia the trick is to have all your dogs look alike and only let 4 out in the yard at a time!  :thumb:

Thanks Kathleen, good to know. Doesn't Jen have quite a bit of Sleepytime in her lines?

This is going to sound stupid, but Jen who?  I know several and one does have Sleepytimes on her males sides (but not her females).  If I were concerned about backs though, I'd go straight to the source.

Oh I remember the pain of having to send my first dachshund to The Bridge due to cancer. The pain should have killed me but it didn't. I was fortunate in the I had knowledge of what was about to happen and what I had to do. About a week before I had to do the last great act of compassion Simon-Angel crawled into my lap and we had a nice little talk. I'm certain he knew what I was saying.  He could never be replaced, but I had to have a stand-in for Ms. Lucy. She didn't deserve to be alone all day while I was at work.

I'm proud to say that my third choice, third try at getting a rescue dog. (the others were adopted before I could act)...my horribly abused 6 year old survivor turned into a damn fine dog. I couldn't ask for or have gotten a better companion for me or Ms. Lucy. IMO a better dog doesn't exist. Mr. Wilson is the inspiration for getting into rescue work.

Being the Southern boy that I am, I don't like people/strangers in my business. I thought the adoption process was a little intrusive...and they had a little something of an "attitude" about them.  Tracy was kinda like "why should I let you adopt my dog?" that was her attitude. Tracy decided that Wilson was safe with me and left him in my care....she was crying when she pulled out of the drive way.  Some dogs are what I call "turn-key dogs" ready to go to a new home as soon as they are vetted and evaluated. Wilson was not a "turn Key Dog"...he was a hard case.

Let me cut to the chase...

If anything happens to me...my dogs will go to my group. In fact Wilson has to go back to the group, my adoption contract requires it. I'm confident that they will place my dogs with as much care and attention as they did when placing Wilson in my home to start with. Yeah my dogs will be safe with DRNA should anything happen to me.

only rescue dogs for me, it's the right thing to do. Great Dogs die every day because there are not enough fosters or members to save them all.

Get a rescue dog.
Get a rescue dog.
Get a rescue dog.

I can't say it enough.

Isn't she cute Barb, I haven't heard yet but am hoping she has her forever home now.

Sorry Kathleen maybe you came after Jen was posting much anymore, she has HarborMyst kennels??

Wow that was some wreck JetEd! Was that your car, did you get hurt?
I am not in the market for a new dog, I am all for rescues though, Hallie came from an animal shelter (although there was a long line of people wanting her so I don't really consider her a "rescue"). I had several fosters in the past that I consider true rescues, wonderful dogs. Hallie was a foster in the beginning. I don't foster anymore because I don't feel it's fair to Hallie. I totally agree we don't need more dogs, but we do need healthier dogs so I am for the few really good breeders out there who are trying hard to improve on doxie health and temperament so there will be fewer rescues in the system for behavior or health problems. But there is far too much breeding going on willy nilly. It's a huge problem and no one person thinks they are part of the problem even the puppy millers so without major changes to law and penalties nothing is going to change. I do have the best godparents for Hallie you could ask for that I am extremely grateful for  :thumb:, I think everyone needs to have a plan for their kids. Still it would be a hard transistion for Hallie to live somewhere else without me, we are attached at the hip and rarely apart and totally head over heels with each other...but I know she'll be safe and loved and would adjust eventually. I'm not sure I will be able to adjust as well, if I lost her first, I can't imagine surviving losing her. I tell her she's the best and I'm the blessed. When it's one of our time, we'll plan to go sit out on the ice floes and shoot rubber bands at the polar bears!

I think I did miss her.  I just spent some time on her site though-she has gorgeous dogs, and yes, lots of Sleepytimes in her lines.   I don't know her (Sleepytime) personally, so I'm not shilling for her-she just has a really good reputation.

I'm certainly not opposed to rescue-I recommend rescue dogs to anyone looking for a dachshund-I have rescue links on my own website (I fostered myself for over a year), but it's not for everyone for various reasons.  You are not going to get a pedigree with a rescue dog (for good reason, I understand), so you have no idea of the health history behind a dog in rescue and no way to research it before buying the dog.   In Dee Dee's case, where she truly doesn't feel she could handle the back problems again, but wouldn't want another breed, choosing a reputable breeder who has worked hard to breed dachshunds with healthy backs is a viable, and reasonable choice.    Having just spent a year researching pedigrees to find the right match for Millie, it's astounding how many breeders have no idea what they're bringing into the world, other than color, so I have a tremendous amount of respect for breeders who test and work for HEALTH, along with conformation and temperament.  It's not cheap to do it right, believe me-you would not want to hear how much money has gone into little miss Millie's health testing and showing career in the last two years.  It's a good thing I'm not married or I'd be in the looney bin right now  :idiot:

In any case, I was not putting down rescue dogs, or suggesting that anyone NOT adopt from rescues.  I was simply suggesting an alternative for Dee Dee's personal situation.  My apologies if I caused offense in any way.

Marcia from MI

Sam Angel was a rescue that came to me with papers from his breeder and guess what the breeder had a very bad reputation.  A friend of mine bred daschies back in the day, but she was very particular and knew all  the other breeders in the area including Sam's.  Mary, my friend bred dashsies before they had all the kibbles we have now and she would make her own food.  Also she was great friends with a German woman named Anna who raised dachsies and gave Mary some very interesting books on the furkids which I found fascinating.  Mary loved it every time Eddie would come to an event and would try to take him home with her.  She passed away a couple years ago and I miss her.

Dee Dee and Hallie

Exactly Kathleen, it's people like you who should be breeding, you've done your homework and done everything right and are trying to breed healthier dogs. You are right, I've been through so much suffering with the three dogs I've had that I am to the point I don't think I could go thru it again, I ruined my own health last year when Hallie had her last back scare, my body is telling me enough is enough. IF I were to ever get a dog again down the road I don't think I could do a dachshund again unless the chances of back problems was reduced as much as possible.

No offense taken at all, we know you support rescue! I believe the dogs we get are meant for us anyway no matter where they come from.
The number of rescues out there is a huge problem, we need a way to cut down on breeders breeding for profit.
