MIL has a older Papillon that has a shrill bark and uses it well MIL you can not tell her anything about how to train a dog . Her way of dealing with the Papillon is screaming at it which we all know will not do anything except maybe make the dog bark more.My question is a No- Bark collar that works pretty good but does not cost a arm & a leg MIL is 80 years old on Social Security so not much monies to work with.Neighbors are starting to complain about the dog's barking, MIL wants to keep the dog because it is a excellent watch dog just too barky. Thanks for any ideas on a bark collar.PS she also has a toy Poodle but he does not bark as much as the Papillon.Patches Mom

Here's an idea! We have 4 dachshies and whenever someone rings the doorbell they just spaz out and start barking like mad so we got a spray bottle and filled it with water and the minute they start barking we show them the bottle and it stops immediately! It does work because when 1 or 2 of them sees it in one of our hands barking stops right away!

MIL tried that for a little while but was not consistant with it she has given this dog human qualities she (MIL) makes statements like Sassy the Papillon knows and she is being a smart a$$, she THINKS she knows better, she is too stupid to learn ,& no one can teach her anything.MIL is way opinionated I have had dogs all my life I know Sassy can not be taught anything she has weird ideas about stuff and you cannot tell her anything she knows everything.
I offered to go over & teach the Papillon not to run out the door nope you can't teach Sassy anything just because she tried it once or twice and it did not work for her no one else can teach her anything.
Sassy's problem is she is very smart needs constructive out let like a good game of fetch everyday, long walks something to have her use her mind but MIL does not believe anything like that i have tried to talk to her. I had a Papillon for 14 1/2 years she was ill with Esophageal Reflux problems but she would wear your butt out throwing the ball for her so all my MIL saw was a calm dog so when she had the chance to get a Pap she did thinking it would be like our Gizmo.
That is why I thought a bark collar would work since the collar would give the correction and all my MIL would have to do is make sure the batteries did not run down.after all she is 80 years old.

We use a tin with nails in it, they start to bark, we shake it and tell them NO, plus it scares the bejesus out of them.

I used a bark collar once on my JR. He stopped barking, and cowarded in the corner for three day. It hurt, (try it on yourself first) and the pain confused him. We don't hit our dogs ever. I am still horrified that I acutally put one on him to control his barking and it's been 15 years since the incident. There are better ways....the water bottle is one, or a water gun. It works for Parker. With the JR we kept him on a short leash, and when he barked we gave him a verbal correction "no barking", and then got off our butts and corrected him if he continued. A lot more effort from us, however, it did work, and the barking was managed after two weeks with the verbal command. Parker is also now managed with just a verbal command. There are also citronella collars that are more humane. I'm not sure if I would consider one but they are out there.

Thank you for the ideas but we are talking about a 80 year old woman that in her mind the dog cannot be trained she has put human emotions in to this dog which no one not even God can change her mind. She is 80 years old would not be consistent with training that is the main problem. The only reason I asked about the bark collar is because her neighbors are starting to complain about the dog barking I have tried my best to get my MIL to turn the Papillon over to a rescue but she will not do it have tried for about 2-3 years now.She has a little poodle she rescued out of the street he is great little dog barks but not like the Papillon which is a higher energy type dog. & smarter than the MIL..
