My normally calm, quiet little Porky has turned into a sudden terror over the last 2 weeks.    He is usually really good about entertaining himself while I am trying to study.  In order to finish the college courses I am working on, in time, I must study 8 hours a day.    I take Porky for a 2 hour walk before I get started. (every morning!)  He also is fed and has an empty bladder, etc..   I have frozen peanut butter kongs that I get out right before I start studying.    Porky is also given "cuddle-time" whenever he asks for it.   (sitting on my lap while I study)    Yet, he still is barking at me, whining at me, and getting into things.    :dontknow:  How can he be so bored when he just got done with an exhausting walk??!     I make sure that the evenings are spent playing with Porky and taking him for another walk.

Any ideas on what I can do to get him to behave while I'm trying to work???    I don't mind cuddling with him, but his whining and getting into things is frustrating.    I don't want to have to go to putting him in his kennel while I study, but I want him to be safe.   Today, he learned how to open the kitchen drawers and was greedily helping himself to his collection of treats.    :doah:   He gets taken to potty every 2 hours, which involves a quick walk down the street.   Basically what I'm needing are some "keep the doxie busy" activities.    I may have to just start studying at night when Justin is home and Porky likes to sleep.    :dontknow:  Help please!!!

Fin is a chewer, so i asked about things to keep him busy at the Pet Place i go to and she gave me a moose knuckle.. Sounds gross i know.

But apparently they are great because they are hard, so they are good for their teeth, and they are completely digestable.

And Fin LOVES it, we have to take it away for bits at a time because he will litterally chew it non stop, he had it going for over two hours!

And its been great for distracting him when i want to read or have something to do.

What about fixing a chair beside you for him to sit besode you with one of his kongs!

I can sympathize, Red does the whine too when he feels he´s not getting enough attention.  Unfortunately I don´t have a magic solution and he never wants to eat except at meal times so bones don´t work either!

I end up putting both Red and Islay together on Miguel´s office chair next to and actually touching me when I´m in the office.  I often end up cooking on one leg with the other foot rubbing his tum whilst he lies there all four paws in the air whining.....Islay snuggles in her bed and watches patiently.

We live in a flat on the seafront and I think part of the problem is that he can´t see out over the terrace to look at the sea, beach and birds etc. unless we lift him up in our arms.  He get bored only looking at ground level when he can hear things going on there down on the beach.

I think it´s a male thing too - they´re overall simply more demanding.......

If you find a great solution, please pass it onto me!

Mental exercise is also tiring for a dog get out the trick book and teach a trick or too some can be usufull too. taught Patches circle now when it rains I can throw a towel down on the floor tell her circle of course i have a treat she wipe s her own feet. Since i have a bad back works out great.Patches knows sit up,wave, roll over, play dead, circle, sit, down, come, speak & shake paws. So kick up the noodles in their heads Dachshunds are smart.A game of fetch works well too but Patches does not want to bring it back yet,she will go get it but does not want to bring it back. Patches is a couch potato sleeps about 23 hours a day if I let her she really gets a work out when out with us on the scooter.

Have to agree with Devid - Red would be a hundred times more dependent on us if it wasn´t for Islay.  They love each others company.

Convince my landlord of that and it will be done!!     :thumb:

Thanks for all the great ideas.   I found out a solution that seems to work for a little while.    He enjoys sitting in the recliner, but knows he's not supposed to jump up there.   I put him in the chair right after our morning potty/walk.   He cuddles up in my blanket and watches me work.  For some reason, he likes to watch "Clifford" on tv??  :dontknow:   So i turned it on for him and he sat zoned out for a while.   Also, I'm going to get a treat ball and puzzle toys for him. I think that would help him a lot.    The chair sitting beside me idea works great!!!     :apls:      I might check into having Bandit come visit once a week for a playdate, while I'm studying.   Although, they might cause double the trouble then.     :2funny:

Whitney has a bed beside my computer so she can play right there, bad thing is she wants me to throw the ball everyother minute so I have to play with her or else!!  Sometimes I give her something to chew on so she is quiet for a few minutes..
