Pretty much since Jessica was an infant, her chair has always been the Altar of Food for our furkids, first with Rudy & Max angels, now with the Zs.   The Zs, in particular have really been able to score well.

Now, there is a new twist.   Jessica has figured out if she intentionally drops something on the ground, the Zs will eat it, and more importantly, if there is something she doesn't want to eat, the Zs will be more than happy to oblige.  Case in point.  I brought home McDonalds for Jessica.   It was a 4 piece McNugget and Fries.  Jessica likes the McNuggets, but she lives for French Fries.  Of course, she has to eat her McNuggets before she can have the fries.   Two McNuggets were consumed, and I gave her some fries after each.  Deciding that she wanted to skip the last two and go straight to the fries, Jessica dropped both McNuggets on the floor.  Both Zs scored one each.  So, now not only are the Zs getting errant pieces of food, they are intentionally getting fed.

In a side note, Zora, has suddenly become very protective of Jessica, even though Jessica  basically ignores her and lavishes her attention on Zeke.   Zeke is tolerant of Jessica, but is otherwise ambivalent towards her.  In the mornings, after I've let the Zs out and given them breakfast, Zora will camp out at Jessica's bedroom door until we get Jessica up.   It's even more pronounced outside, where Zora clearly wants to sit with me, but her instincts to watch Jessica are more powerful than her desire to sit in my lap.  Zora will come over to me, but when Jessica moves off, or heads away, Zora will break off heading to me to keep and eye on Jessica.   Zora is also the first of the pair to "sound the alarm" when something is amiss.  As soon as she barks, Zeke comes flying in from wherever he was to stand shoulder to shoulder with Zora.    Really fun to watch.

"I tried marriage and children - it ended badly.
I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."

Sounds like a win win situation for fur kids and human one. At least you know Jessica is guarded well whither she wants it or not. It's funny how they decide who is theirs.

Doggone it!  I wish I would have thought of that when I was Jessica's age.  "Here Grettie (our dachsie at the time) you want my liver?  Hominy?  Brussels Sprouts?"

It is so interesting to read about Zora and Jessica. My co-worker has a nephew with autism. His family will soon be getting a dog from an organization here called Dogs for Autism, http://www.dogsforautism.org/Development.html. It is incredible what these dogs will do and the freedom they can allow some of the children and their families. It sounds like Zora has decided to be Jessica's dog, without any training!

Teresa, one of our rescue babies from Foxy Doxy Dachshund Rescue just went to an autistic young adult man.  What a SUCCESS!  That sweet big standard really has opened this man's world!
