The Hunt, The Kill

My Sammy Bear killed an adult rabbit in our yard this morning. I let the boys out first thing this morning, as usual, for a morning potty. I heard a high pitched screech coming from the backyard. By the time I got my glasses and robe and got outside, Sammy had opened up the rabbit and was eating its guts. I was horrified! Sammy, on the other hand, seemed very pleased with himself. When I left for work, he was contentedly licking his paws in the house, digesting the delicious rabbit. I must admit that I was completely unprepared and had no idea what to do. (It certainly did not help that I was wearing my bathrobe, not so empowering). I could not yell at him because I know this is his instinct. Also, Sammy lived on his own outdoors for some time before he went into rescue, so he must have hunted to survive. Nonetheless, he sleeps in my bed and licks my face. No more killing! And what is with these rabbits, squirrels, etc. that continue to come into our fenced backyard? We have 4 dogs, 2 of which are dachshunds - the odds of surviving a trip into our yard are slim!

YUCK! I suppose there really is not much you can do once the deed has been done. My Toby-Man Angel LOVED to hunt and would bring home all sorts of repulsive gifts for me. Fortunately he never tried to eat any of the prey...just wanted to show it off.
Beatrice has taken up where he left off and has 2 moles, 1 REALLY stupid bird (long story) and numerous lizzies to her credit. My other three are not really all that interested in the hunt but I suspect if a critter happened to just cross where they could get it they certainly would.

Ahem . . .

Merlin ate the front half of a squirrel before Auntie Karen caught him and made him put the rest down for disposal.

Bunnies are not allowed on our menu due to certain in-house residents with axes to grind.

Auntie Karen says it might have been a hare which is actually a different species and much more likely to survive outdoors. They are born with eyes open and live alone, whereas bunnies are social and live in groups.

Sammy must be a pretty good stalker, as rabbits (or a hare) usually have no trouble evading a dachshund. What used to happen with Rudy-angel (and Max-angel to a lesser extent) was they could keep up with the rabbit in a dead run, but the rabbit could turn inside them and make their getaway. However, neither Rudy or Max ever caught anything warm-blooded.

Poor Rudy must be turning in his grave over Zeke's ineptness as a hunter. Zeke has been presented prey almost literally on a silver platter...opportunities Rudy would have relished. Zeke either fails to recognize them or is so blatant in his pursuit that the prey easily gives him the slip.

Zora has no killer instinct. All her instincts are maternal. While she is merciless to her toys, she has attempted to mother ferrets and cats. Even when hooman Jessica gets upset, her maternal instincts kick in.

Clifford here: I thought our name was Clampett. I caught 3 possums and was waiting to have dinner out by the cement pond. I even tried to bring 1 inside so we could prepare it.

OMG, I was quite startled to open the door one night and he was standing there with the darn possum in his mouth. He relunctantly put in down in trade for a cookie.

All right, Sammy - I like your style! I killed my own rabbit in my back yard, too, but I didn't get to eat it, because my momma said we didn't know where it'd been, so it was taken from my custody!

Sammy says: I am glad my mum was too stunned and vulnerable in her bathrobe to get the rabbit away in time. That rabbit was deeeeelicious! I am sneaky and wild, and mum is struggling to keep up with my trickery!
