How do each of you maintain your doggies nails?

After researching the PediCure (whatever) and PediPaws, I saved my $$$ and use a Dremel. I can do BOTH dogs (our Golden & Cali) in maybe 10-15 minutes flat! It took Cali (she could care less!) no time to get used to it, but Brandee is 9 1/2 so it took her only 2 times to not care anymore (and she HATES her feet touched!)
We have a cordless, small model and put a sanding tip in it and it works FAN-TAS-TIC  :thumb: ! I do a little at a time and maybe once every 2 weeks. I've heard about using a Dremel for YEARS, but was too scared. I got tired of using the guillotine-type cutters, so went for it.

Just my 2 cents :)

We have a PediPaws and Porky loves it!!  It is the only way I can trim his nails.  He freaks out with anything else.   We work on his nails a little every night right before his tooth brushing.    If you keep up with them they are real easy to maintain.

I'm seriously considering getting one of these. I've about decided that if Schatzi won't let me use it on her, my friend will take it from me and use it on Murphy-he will tolerate anything! Molly will probably be hopeless since we truly can't touch her feet, but it may be worth a try with her. I'll have to look into this sometime in the next week or two.

Teresa,

I have a Pedipaws that I purchased to use on Sarge & Duggie.  They will have nothing to do with it.....so it's only been used for about 10 minutes.  I would be happy to send it to you, if you want it.  I take both Sarge & Duggie to the Vets to get their nails trimmed......it is worth the $8.50 that they charge me.  That way, all of us are not stressed!   Let me know if you would like the Pedipaws.....I'll send it....otherwise, it's just sitting on a shelf.

I too use a dremel.  In fact, I used to use the cordless pet one, but the lack of battery life was driving me crazy, so now I use the ordinary power dremel that I had in my toolbox, with the small sanding drum.    I can do all four of my dogs in ten minutes, but you do have to be careful of the longhaired dogs tails if they flip them up between their legs when you're doing the back feetsies.  I tuck their tail between my knees (after learning my lesson on the cordless, low powered version) to keep it safe.  You also should make sure their feet hairs are trimmed (no bedroom slippers) to prevent that hair from getting wrapped around the dremel head and causing major ouchies.  I do feet trims about once a month and dremel Murphy's nails about once every ten days (his nails grow like CRAZY!!!).  Everyone else gets theirs done when their feet get trimmed or the nails look a little long.

I got the Pedicure it was not strong enough for Buddy my Dobie so use hubby's on him.Patches is a drama queen deluxe I started out slow did one nail at a time treats and all were given, and Patches hates it. Takes two people to hold her down she kicks all four feet it cost me $20.00 to take them to the vets to get nails done so I use the Dremel.I'm a mean momma we do nails whether they like it or not they do not have a choice, hubby was holding her down be he can't stand the little bratt's whining, Debbie from down the street does them sometimes.Papbouv

Fin doesnt like anything that makes whirring noises or hums, so i just use clippers then file them, and he is pretty good for the most part.

We use a PediPaw on Parker, but it's a two person job. Now he just resigns himself that it's going to get done.
He does a lot of racing around the cement pool deck, so lately he has been getting a break.

I guess the PediPaws, etc. is ok for small dogs, but I have a Golden, too. Cali will tolerate ANYTHING (Bless Her) but our Golden HATES feet touching & has gotten used to the Dremel. YES-watch out for long-hairs! That Dremel spins so fast & snags one & yikes! The Dremel & The PediPaws work the same-emery board, so the first-mentioned has one purpose only, the 2nd, has many uses!!! I use the small, cordless one & it works fine & can't imagine using the large one. Now we'll have to see how Bailey handles it! Cali, you can cut the hair in front of her eyes & she won't move, you can do anything (EXCEPT SWIMMING!!!) with her. She tolerates it, but despises it...and thus far, Bailey LOVES water. GeeWhiz. I  them ALL!

My four are in complete agreement with Sargey and Duggie....  PEDICURE????  FORGET IT!
I found that it got really hot after a very short period of time...which added to the whole "No way, we are not having it" attitudes!
My vet charges five dollars per furkid....no fuss, no mess, no trauma... for them or for me!

I just put Scooter on his back, in my lap, and clip his nails with a normal old manual trimmer - not the guillotine one, the one that looks more like a scissors.   I've tried the Dremel, but Scooter can be such a nervous little guy...he had EPIC MELTDOWNS every time I tried so I gave up.  I wouldn't say he enjoys his pedicures, but he endures them.  With plenty of sighing and woeful looks, naturally.

Sometimes I'll take him up to the Petsmart near my house.  They do a nail trim/ear cleaning for pretty cheap, and you don't need an appointment.  And it's nice to have someone else be the "bad guy" so I don't have a resentful little Dachshund on my hands for the rest of the day...

He really is a Good Boy, though.  I am constantly surprised by how patient he is with his old Mom...

I forgot to mention that-very true, and if you're new to it, a very good thing to keep in mind.  You can't hold it on the nail continuously until you're happy with the look.  You have to hold it there for one or two seconds then lift off to allow the nail to cool.  It's the friction that causes the heat, so if you do one to two seconds then off for a second then one to two seconds on again until you're done, it keeps cool.

Excellent advice! I never do them that long anyhow, so never had a problem, but good to warn others!  :thumb:
