Hello everyone,
I haven't been the greatest "friend"...I've been away for a long time dealing with some health and personal issues.
But I know you all are a FABULOUS bunch and won't hold it against me

So on Wednesday I noticed that the usual "maniac of the house" AKA Delilah, wasn't acting normal.  Usually she plays non stop and races around.  She was loafing around and walking very slowly.  It got worse on Thursday and when I carries her out to go potty she wouldn't walk.  She "could" hold her weight, but wouldn't.  SO off to the vet.  They think it is a mild back episode.... she had no signs of paralysis, thought which is good.... she righted her feet, etc...... but when he checked her range of motion on her left back leg she cried and tried to bite.
So she's on 3 weeks of crate rest, prednisone, and Valium.   The kicker of it all is: as we were leaving, I had to set her down to pay and then a big aggressive dog was coming in.  My maternal instincts kicked in I tried to scoop her up at rocket speed which caused me to hurt my back.  I was in so much pain that I couldn't pick her up to put her in my car nor could I get into the car myself.  I ended up calling my husband who managed to come and get us.  So he managed to get me into the back hatch of my car & there I stayed in a fetal position all the way home and then off to the ER for me.  <<SIGH>>
When it rains it pours.... have some pity on my poor husband as he now has two disabled females and one grouchy old male (Franky) to take care of.

So we'd "been there done that" with Franky's cervical IVDD and surgery was the only option.  We are not as familiar with back episodes.   Is there hope with out surgery??  Have any of you had a full recovery using the conservative approach?
Thanks!
Dawn

**UPDATE***
Despite our actions, Delilah lost deep pain sensation in her left rear side.  She is having surgery as we speak.  They give her a 60% chance of walking again. Please, even if you don't like me very much, pray for my baby.
thanks!

Dawn, there have been many successes with the conservative approach.  Just go to www.dodgerslist.com and post about Delilah and you will get many helpful responses.  8 weeks of crate rest is recommended when you use the conservative approach.  Crate rest is the most important thing you can do for Delilah right now.  Just make sure you have ear plugs, frozen kongs filled with peanut butter and a stiff drink for yourself!!!  God Bless you all and I pray everything works out for the best for both you and Delilah.  Hope you yourself are feeling much better.  What did the ER doctors say about your back??

Oh man was that a horrible day or what! I hope you are both feeling a lot better now! I agree with Cheryl there have been a lot of successes with the conservative approach. Surgery isn't always the first or only answer. It looks good for her right now because she hasn't lost her legs...just be sure to stay TOUGH and not let her out of the crate sooner than the vet says. They can reinjure themselves very easily until they are completely healed up and they might feel fine but still not be healed so be sure to follow all instructions. Take care of yourself too I just hate it when a big dog aggressive or not coems around scares you to death I also have the instinct to scoop them up!

Ouch!  Rays for both of you!  Any time a dachsie has back issues, I am on that as soon as I know.  Having had my first one put to sleep back in 1978 for very low percentage of even recovering from surgery, my second one with calcification and a few episodes, my third one with surgey and a slow recovery, so far, the following dachsies have not had issues, but I feel your pain - threw my back out several years ago, helping my mother, and was too sore to get to meet Mike and Clifford!

Mega rays on the way...

There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Oh, Dawn. I'm so very sorry it came to surgery. You caught it quick and did the right thing. That increases her chances tremendously. Let us know how you're both doing as soon as you get a chance. Gretchen had surgery about 5 years ago and came back 100%. Delilah will show you that they are tough little doggies.

Oh Dawn, I'm holding both you and Delilah in my heart.  I've been so absent around here and just poked in and saw this.  Take it one minute at a time.  Things will get better.  You and Miss Delilah are in my thoughts.

I cannot express my thanks for your support......and although I am still crying.... you all need to know how much your kind words help me keep the faith.  Delilah is still in intensive care and we go to visit her 2x a day.  She's being a bugger by not eating until we are there with her.  The great news is that she is showing some resistance when they manipulate her legs and she is able to maintain a standing position for a few seconds when they stand her up!!!!!!!!!!!

What wonderful news!!!  It took Clifford 8 days to get up on his back legs so Delilah is ahead.
