I won't wear that coat to any more meetups...

Deb G.

this is actually a funny story…

This is a story about my coat.  It is made of polar fleece, and is a print design of bare oak tree limbs and leaves on white.  It is “car-coat” length, so it hangs to the floor when put over the back of a chair.

This is also the story of going to the Dachshund meetup this last Sunday.  The “meetup” was held at the Premiere Pets, in their agility room.   For those who've never been to one, a Dachshund Meetup is where Dachshund owners from the area who all communicate on the internet, get together and bring their dachshunds for off-leash play in a confined area.  There are treats and conversations for humans and dogs alike.  There is a circle of chairs put out for the humans to sit in during the more formal portion of the meeting.  Everyone, including me, put their coat over the back of their chair, purses and appurtenances nearby.  The meetup had an Irish theme, so most dachshunds were wearing green.  There were likely 20-30 people there, and each one had 1-5 dachshunds with them, all running loose.

The meet had gone well.  Sam, who we feared was not as socialized as he should be, was still shy, but doing well.  Sophie continued to be “Sophie the Good” as well as “Sophie the Cute” and “Sophie the Princesse”.  Rich had gone with Sam to a far corner of the room where people in Rescue were exchanging contact information.  I decided to take Sophie over to the agility equipment area and see if she wanted to play.  She did.  She did the elevated walkway and the A-Frame, several times.  She sat on the box.  We then started back towards our chair.

I was amazed, from halfway across the room to see a line of dachshunds that did not belong to me,  by my chair.  I was more than dismayed to see a dapper little green-kerchiefed dachshund lift his little stubby leg and whiz on my coat, which being “car-coat” length, hung to the floor vertically.  His aim was dead-on.  I shouted “No!”, but could not be heard over the human conversation, but especially not over the barking (you would not believe the barking"someone is always barking!) . He trotted off as the next dachshund took his place... Sophie and I accelerated our pace to the scene of the coat crime,  and shooed the rest of the line of waiting dachshunds away.  Sure enough, upon inspection, I could see that more than one dachshund had “made his mark”.   Right on the pocket of my coat.  I cleaned up the remaining puddle.

I was thankful that it wasn’t too cold"because I now had no coat to wear home.  I carried it out and put it in the trunk.  Upon arriving home, I washed it first thing.  I wondered that other dogs were marking my coat.  Why me?  Why no one else?  It was only later that I realized what really happened….

Those dogs were trying to be good.  They marked the only tree that they could see!  The tree print of the coat coming up from the floor looked remarkably like a real tree.  And after ONE marked it, well, the others figured that it SMELLED like a tree too"and the line formed.  Only God knows how many dachshunds marked my coat before I stopped it!

I'll go to more meetups, but I don’t think I’ll wear that coat to any more dachshund meetups!

LOL that has to be the story of the year.  :2funny: I'd loved to have a video of the doxie potty line to your coat! They probably wondered why you were excited over them going on a tree!

I would love to see new photos of Sophie and Sam, has Rich had his camera out with the kids lately? How are things going with Sam, are he and Sophie good buddies now?

Oh my!  Sorry about your coat.....but your story WAS HOWLARIOUS!

We go to the SLO Dachshund meetup every 1st Sunday of the month.  Except for rainy days (where we usually find an indoor place like a social room at PetSmart), we meet at one of our dog parks.  As for a formal "meeting" type thing, it simply does not exist in our group.  We usually have about 20-40 dachsies and their people.  It's a riot to see all of the long dogs playing and sniffing around.  It's also really funny when a BIG dog comes into "our" area and all the dachsie security guards run it off.  Maddie has become MUCH more social, especially with Bonnie to help her out.  Bonnie is Miss Social Butterfly, but we've got to keep an eye on her or wanderlust takes over.  This is not a fenced dog park and she tends to go skipping off on grand adventures.

 And at least now you know how to set up an indoor "pee station" for the meet-ups!  Our meet-ups at jamie's in Baltimore turn into a wizz fest for the boys.  Lucky for us her house is set up for marking visitors!
