Much to my disgust, one day, I smelled something on Sophie's breath that didn't belong there.  She had joined the PEA club!  (Poop Eaters of America).  Sophie is a compulsive licker (if only they gave awards for that, she would have trophies) and likes to get up close and personal, so we noticed her stench-breath right away (ewww!) .

I researched online, and have found a solution that seems to work for us.  There are several parts to the solution, and we don't know yet if any "one" thing is doing it, but together, they are working, keeping our girl's breath nice and clean (Sam has not joined the club):
1) add one teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin to each dog's every meal*
2) make sure that the yard area is cleaned of "logs" as this is the issue for some dogs--they eat to clean it up
3) If, (like in Iowa) the logs are frozen down and immoveable until spring, spray the logs with plain old cheap vinegar (I keep mine in an old "Resolve" carpet cleaner spray bottle) soak them, and they'll taste too nasty to eat to dogs.
4) Be suspicious--investigate and call dogs in if they are out longer than usual for no reason
5) In our snow-covered yard, we have "dogpaths" that we've scooped through the inches of snow.  Dogs usually use one area for their "logs".  Every few days, I cover their old area with snow and create a new area (known as a "poopatorium").
6)make sure that your dog's protein requirements are being met adequately (hers were)

* It is said too, that pineapple or spinach will work for this too, but I haven't tried these yet.

Anyhow, it seems to be working well, and they like the pumpkin.  Thought I'd share in case anyone else is in need of info..

Thank you so much for the info and that is so funny it must be a wiener dog thing because Romeo did that also, I don't think he does anymore or at least it doesn't smell like it.  Sometimes he will come in and be licking his chops and I will say "you better not be eatin poop" lol lol to funny.
hugs and love laura

When I am out walking Parker, I have to give him constant verbal prompts when he expresses interest in feces. Some people look at me like I'm nuts, and some just smile, nod their heads and comment that their dogs also are members of PEA.  Oh, the prompt is
"No snacking Parker, you need to leave that. We will have a treat when we got home".

Dearest Sophie,
I too, was found out to be a chartered member of PEA by my mama because of my obsessive licking disorder. Dat incident has pwompted me to found da gwoup, OCLA, or Obsessive Compulsive Licking Annoymous.    My Licking has caused me many interferences in my daily life and made my life a living heck....(mama won't let me say da real word.)    If you are interested in joining it is free to join.  Da onwy fing we ask is you share your stowy to help odders overcome dis horrible disease.    Also meetings are ebery Fursday at noon.   We also ask dat you find yourself a sponsor, so you will not be tempted to engage in dese kinds of activities for me.   I have been lick free for a whole minute!!!   :meme:

As for da PEA, I have no intention of unjoining dat club.   I jus like da taste...what can I say?  :dontknow:
