Is duck a good ingredient to feed dogs in canned food? I got my eagle pack holistic canned food order that was supposed to be chicken but I just noticed it is duck and chicken. I have never fed Hallie duck and I am always afraid to change things (I rotate between beef and chicken). I have not researched duck much since I never planned to feed it. Is it considered a good protein and not a common allergen or something I need to know? Not sure if I should give her this or return it for chicken.

Don't see why not, its just a bit oiler than chicken, but hey chicken probably now has so many chemicals in it now. I once in a while do duck for Nick, and our pair go spare over it, Amy I dare say would go for it feathers and all....................go for it let her decide you might procrastinate and Ms H might tell you politely "I DON 'T LIKE IT', it does have a stronger taste than chicken.

Eddie has eaten pet food with duck before and he loves  it.

Dee Dee, the Gang has eaten canned duck & potato mixed with their dry from Dick VanPatten's Natural Balance and had no side affects.  They loved it.  When I worked at the vet clinic, our vet used duck or vension to do food trials.  I wouldn't be afraid to give it to Hallie.  If you are concerned, just start with a small amount and keep a watchful eye on her.

Well, Robinton has not had the chance to try it, but the same group that makes Grammy's Pot Pie, also makes "turducken" - turkey, duck and chicken, and Brekke loves it when I get it for her.  Robinton is such a food meister that I could probably feed him feathers and all, as Roberta said! :2funny:

Duck is one of the protein sources used in food allergy trials.  If she has never had it before it should be OK to give her.  Cajsa has had kangaroo based food and as sensitive as she is it was just fine for her.  Duck is fine for Cajsa so I would imagine Hallie would be good with it as well.

Thanks you guys I feel better about it. If it is oilier than chicken would that mean it has a higher fat content? I do worry about pancreatitis with Hallie she has always had a touchy tummy and will get bad tummy aches now and then that I've loosely connected to eating something a little fattier than usual. So I guess after hearing how safe it is otherwise that would be my only other concern, the fat?

Ms H would be on her way to the ER if she told me she didn't like anything! LOL!! (except fruit  :thumb: other than bananas that is not on her list of edibles...yet cat poop is go figure).

Fed duck & chicken to my two they loved it no problems it was from Eagle Pack canned. Oh Momma the ER is not the place for me I will scarf it down not even taste it so no problem being duck I most likely will not even know.I truly believe dogs have taste buds in their stomachs dogs are usually equal opportunists when it comes to eating.Their are some pick fur kids just holding out to see if something better might come their way, like people food maybe?

DD, nothing gets by you!!!  LOL!!!  You are a great doxie-mom!

Yeah Papbouv I think if we keep the poor buggars on a diet always to keep their weight down like we do, they will eat just about anything. My vet today jokingly handed Hallie a piece of her raw carrot stick thinking she'd never eat it but she did.

Patty sometimes my neurosis works for me and sometimes against me lol.

DD, as they say, better to err on the side of caution.  Hallie is a lucky girl to be your kid.
