So Marley is growing so fast! She is probably 1 lb heavier than when I first signed up to this site [last week]. I'm just wondering if anyone knows a healthy weight for a 9-almost 10 week old mini wiener. I feed her 3 times a day, each meal consists of a half cup of dry puppy food mixed with about 2 tablespoons of wet puppy food. She usually gets fed a treat every day, or half of one.

She gets 1 1/2 cups of food a day.

she eats like a cow!

I really couldn't tell ya what she should weigh. I don't know what your feeding her but I would follow the manufactuers recomendations.

That sounds like a lot to me, also.  I would check with my vet and see how much he/she recommended.  I know your dog is a puppy, but I think puppy food has more calories in it than regular.  Do see what your vet says.

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

If you get her spayed in the future cut back some on the food Patches my Long Hair is fighting the battle of the bulge gained weight after her spay and it is heck trying to get it off.

Ok, my 2 cents -
I have a AKC Registered "mini" weiner dog that is 24 lbs.  Two breeders have told me that every so often mini's can legitimately "throw" a standard.  Thats neither here nor there since we love him regardless.  My vet says his bone structure is too small to be a mini, but not large enough to be a standard size.  WhatEVER.
Back to topic - our vet says he should be 21-22 lbs.  He is ALL about food.  Routine is key.  If he gets a treat at 8 pm, there better be one there every night at the same time.  So I've conceded to the fact he just is going to be heavy.  Like people - he does  not have the best metabolism.
On the other hand, I also have a mini dachshund that is really a mini.  He is about 10 lbs soaking wet.  They both get treats at the same time, but Kirby is more about hugs and kisses and licks than food.  He is hyper pretty much 12 out of 24 hours.  I don't care what he eats, because he burns it all off.

Bottom line, all dogs are different - if your dog is healthy and happy and you feed him quality food and treats - well, what else is there???

Best of luck, and belly rubs to your pooch.

Hey!
Just wanted to thank everyone for their caring replies! I'm happy to say that my boyfriend and I took our little girl to the vet and got her on a proper diet!
Many thanks!

I'm nosy what did your vet recommend to fed her???? You can check out any dog foods at the following web site  http:www.dogfoodanalysis.com  it is very interesting  to find out the ratings of the different foods. It is good if you learn to read dog food labels some have allot of fillers which are not good most of the time for dogs mostly your grocery store  brands allot have corn in them. I found out years ago it is sometimes better to feed a higher quality food because you feed less of it in the long run which makes up the difference in the higher price.
Good Luck with your pup.

I also have a big mini, male 4yrs old now. Both his parents are small, especially the mother. My Roadster weighs about 25 lbs. Very big boned. He is over weight, Vet would like to see him at 18 to 20. He loves food. I feed him Innova, no grain in the formula, no  carbs, 1/4 cup in morning, 1/4 cup at night. And he is still a porker, I do treats, but again just chicken. no grain treats. I do feed him from the table a little, my husband yells at me and tells me that is why he is fat. He is a very laid back little dog, very little exercise. I wish some one would of told me before that Dachshunds  have a tendency to get fat easy. Any ideas on how to get his weight down without starving him? He is my 1st Dachshund, and the love of my life.

check out this website and compare -- remember this is for an adult dog.

And if all else looks good, coat, eyes, muscle tone, teeth,  maybe like King Sol (and hey, Sue how about some pics?  That dog is a TANK and so handsome.  I wouldn't want to be the chippie HE corners in the yard.) mebbe he's just gonna be a big little dawg.

That said, carrots, green beans, low fat yogurt are all ways to bulk up the diet without adding too many calories.  I think also someone has posted comparisons of leading dog foods on this site.

I feed Wellness 5 and always have.  My 22 pounder gets a total of 1/2 cup a day and probably that much in carrots and green beans.  My little girl (just weighed in at 12.8 lbs) get just shy of 1/3 cup of kibble and lots of carrots, yogurt.

I have been veeeeery careful that they are not gaining weight because their regular exercise has been curtailed.  (Big girl just have disc surgery--NO RUNNING JUMPING PLAYING!) and there are still two honking groundhogs in my yard just ASKING to get their butts whooped--so my two have been leashed and tethered while in the yard.  Usually the snuffle around and run a bit and wrassle, too, which burns the calories.

I would increase his exercise and stop the chikken treats.  Amazing what two 20 minutes walks can do.

Thanks for the tips for treats. He loves vegetables, I never thought of the yogurt! I know he will like that. There is very little he doesn't like, I keep telling him little dogs are supposed to be finicky eaters. They eat very little. He's not buying that for second. It's funny you called him a "big little dog", that is what his vet calls him. I will have to dig up some pictures of him. I do have some in his Halloween outfit, he was a fat little Bumble be.

I cut Patches back to 1/8 of a cup of diet dog food in the morning and the evening also when it is not raining I take them walking with my medical scooter. She was at 15.7# during winter now staying at 13.7# wish I could get a little more off of her but not going to cut her food back any more than it already is, added green beans, carrots, cottage cheese & some chicken white meat only. Not sure if I will get any more weight off of her or not also feed Pineapple hoping she will not eat poop she has been a poop eater forever heard Pineapple will work ???

According to the British show "Me Or The Dog" pineapple added to the diet makes the poop taste awful.
I am not vouching for this and I am DEFINITELY not volunteering to taste test!!! :eeew:
