Little Missy has shooting diarrhea since yesterday. I took a sample to the vet but didn't find anything. She feels OK otherwise. Of course my vet is closed today and I didn't think yesterday to pick up some ID just in case....figured it was a one time thing for some stupid reason.  We were up a couple of times last night on an emergency run outside. She's done this off and on before, I of course know to keep her hydrated and what not but what is it that's good to feed them (since it looks like I'm going to have to remember how to turn on a burner on the stove and cook something unless microwave will do!). I've got rice I can cook and I'm guessing pumpkin? Chicken?? What do you guys do when your puppers have the runs? (and remember I'm kitchen challenged so a detailed map on how to prepare?)

We usually do a small amount of plain chicken and rice and that is all. I usually toss a chicken breast in the microwave to cook it (I'm super kitchen challenged as well!! )

I'm glad I'm not alone Kari! So if lets say it's one chicken breast, how long and on what setting would you microwave it? I just now fed her rice mixed with a little chicken canned food, she was voracious and when she pooped just now the 2nd half was slightly formed (only on this board can I say these things). So hopefully if I can show some self restraint and feed her just small portions of rice and I'll get some chicken, this will be a short bout. I suspect it has something to do with the little gifts the  neighbor cat leaves us in the garden, she got into one yesterday morning and I think that has happened before with these bouts. (dang people who don't keep their cats home!!) I am going to be covering mostof the garden with lawn.

Plain white or brown rice tightens things up for Alex when he has this problem.

Scoop of pumpkin if you have some.  I boil chicken breasts - for about 40 minutes - when you cut into them - should be white all the way through.  I mix with brown rice, and make sure some of the water from the rice is in the bowl - helps get them some liquid and it tastes good.  Rays to Miss Hallie BB - let us know how she does....

Depends on how thick it is but I put it in on full power for about 5 min - turn it over 1/2 way through the time.

We remodeled our place a couple of years ago and when we did the kitchen Drew said it was just for looks since it would never be used!

Thanks for the advice, she is acting normal and hasn't gone since about an hour ago but we'll see once this rice hits her system. She is drinking plenty. But I will add extra liquid to her rice mix too. We'll go out right now and pick up the chicken and some pumpkin. I'm sure she'll be fine she's had a touchy tummy every oncr in a while since I got her. I remember her worst bout when she was 3 and had diarrhea like this for 6 days straight and then she went another 3-4 days without being able to go at all! Poor grrl.

Poor pooper. Ooops, bad choice of words.  Did the vet not reccomend some Kaopectate?

I usually boil a boneless chicken breast and then shred it up and mix it with the white rice.  Works pretty well for the tummy upsets. 
Glad to hear things have settled down for our gorgeous Miss Hallie!  Upset tummies are no fun!

Kari we must have posted at the same time. Too funny about your kitchen. My friends give me a bad time because I have to dust my stove.

Les normally she acts disgusted by poo and she never eats her own or other dogs. Most kitty poo she will also ignore (she will sniff pooh very delicately then wrinkle up her nose and back away like GROSS it's POOP!). But for whatever reason, when there is cat poo in her garden, she will sometimes get it into her head that it grew there so must be food. She's more of a roller in it if anything.  :thumb: Yes we will go to the kaopectate if this doesn't clear up, she has in the past though then gone the other way with kaopectate and been stopped up for several days so hope this will resolve itself first.

Thank Terri, I am going to do up some chicken for her there is definitely nothing wrong with her appetite, I'm going to give her small meals but I don't have the heart to starve her for 24 hours like the vets say. I would if it were worse but poor thing she's always so hungry anyway since she doesn't get much to keep her weight down.

Dee, do you have any places in your yard with standing water?  The reason I ask is that I went through this about two months ago with all three of mine.  It turned out they drank water out of my Christmas tree stand that I had left sitting on my back patio, and they all got Giardia from it.  Mind, I had a bowl of fresh water sitting on the lawn less than ten feet away from the stand, but what do they prefer?  Nasty standing water.     We did two weeks of Metrodiazanole (something like that) and it cleared up.  Winston lost a lot of weight during that episode-and he didn't have much to lose, so it gave me a scare.

Poor Hallie!   I just let the frozen cubes of pumpkin thaw for a couple hours, or open up a can.   I also use rice if there's a diarrhea problem.  (Hey, DD and Kari - I saw a new cookbook at Barnes & Noble yesterday - I don't remember the exact title, because I only glanced at it, but it was something like "If You Can Read, You Can Cook".  My mother should have written one like that - it's what she's always saying!   Seriously, ladies, cooking is not that hard.  The timing is the tricky part - having everything done at about the same time for a meal is really the challenge.)

Of course, these are the same dogs we all obsess over feeding organic, all-natural, fresh cut filet while THEY are in the alley scarfing down two-week-old dead squirrel carcasses!

You got that right Roberta, Hallie has a very curly tushie now from all the rinsing off in the sink.

Thanks Darcel she seems to be feeling OK her last BM was a little more formed again. She does seem sleepy today but that would stand to reason.

Yikes Kathleen what a scare that had to be! My aunt had giardia last summer we never could figure out where she got it from and she was real sick she actually passed away while in the hospital with it in September.  There is no standing water in my yard but that was a good thought of things to check. It's very flat and I have purposely not put any trees or landscaping back there so she will have less to run into or hurt herself on! I am with her whenever she is outside too and always have my eagle eye on her so I don't think she got into anything I didn't know about (she was quick with the kitty doo). When she has these tummy episodes she will stretch her head out in front of her and cringe like she's riding out some pain and when I hold her tummy with my hands, it will suddenly get really big at that time like a huge gas bubble going through. I always fear bloat but she always has diarrhea with it so things aren't blocked. Poor girl though it breaks my heart when she is in pain but it seems to pass pretty quickly.

Thanks Julia I did get her some "dire-rhea supplies" and she is loving the menu. I don't think I'm so bad in the kitchen because I can't follow the directions...I am so bad because I HATE it. LOL. I just can't stand taking the time to prepare food and clean up etc. I will stand there and feel all frustrated and think there are sosososososoooo many other things I need to be doing right now. And since I am not having fun and always in a hurry I will not read the directions as close as I should and then I mess everything up. Yet I shall suffer thru when Hallie needs me!

Too bad you don't live close to me. I have 4 cans of I/D in the cabinet from when Schatzi was sick after her surgery. Why in the world they thought a 10 lb dachshund needed 6 cans of the stuff, I'll never know. Maybe they didn't think she was going to get better too fast? Considering that it wasn't her favorite stuff, we used about a can and a half. At least I have some if I ever need it. Nutro Naturals does make a canned food for sensitive stomachs that is chicken and rice. I used it before I could get her to the vet. They also gave me packets of powdered stuff that is supposed to replace the healthy bacteria they lose. Smells awful, but worked. I have about 8 packets of it left! If she or Molly have problems again (and with their own backyard, that just may happen) I'm prepared! Hope Hallie gets better before you have to cook too much!

Poor Hallie baby!  Patches has always had a queasy tummy and periodic bouts with loose stools.  It's boiled chicken, shredded with rice or ground turkey with rice.  When the dog food contamination was a problem they all ate turkey and rice for a couple of months.  It was actually cheaper than buying dog food:) 

As far as cooking...I dont' cook on any day ending in "y".  It's not that I can't, I just don't enjoy it!
