Hey, all - I've been out of touch because things here are so crazy busy, but I have a problem with Schatzie and I'm looking for advice.  About 3 months ago, Schatzie began peeing the moment my 15-year old son emerged from his room in the morning.  She acts so excited to see him, she can't help herself, she just pees all over the place - the sofa, the floor, his lap...and with the tail wagging like mad, well, it's like watching a lawn sprinkler.  Every single morning.  She gets really excited, the tail starts and she approaches him and either rolls over on her back at his feet or squats.  She'll do this half a dozen times if he so much as looks at her! I've put her out and she does her business, but the moment she sees him, no matter how "dry" she is, she's got pee in reserve for him.  If she's locked in her kennel, she will just whimper until she's let out and then she pees - we're talking a very long time, so I know she's capable of "holding it".  My husband recently had surgery and is recovering at home, so he is around more and now she's doing it to him, too.
She doesn't pee when she sees me for the first time in the morning.  I don't know whether to be happy or feel rejected.
We've always known she's a sumbissive piddler when encountering strangers, but this is a new (and yucky!) behavior.  Has anyone heard about this, experienced it or, hopefully, solved it?  I don't scold her, but jeeze, begining every day cleaning up urine is really bringing me down, not to mention making a real mess of my carpets and furniture. I'm at my wit's end! She's just been to the vet and she does not shown any evidence of a UTI, so it's clearly behavioral. Advice?

What does your son & husband do when she does this do they lean over her to pet her or rub her belly? Was watching Animal Planet the UK Dog show Its me or the Dog. The dog behaviorist said to ignore the dog no petting no looking at the dog cannot remember the rest but if you talk to a dog behaviorist or google it you should be able to find an answer it is a common problem with some small dogs.Patches does it every once in awhile with new people I had though of using her as a Therapy dog but with that issue I cannot trust her to go to Hospitals or Nursing homes. It is difficult to deal with at best something about being submissive to a person the dog is not doing it on purpose it is something in their make-up they can not help it,getting on to them makes it worse. There is some help out there one solution is maybe panties for incontinence for dogs until you can find out more information about this problem. Would save you carpets and cut down on your cleaning it is cheaper to buy womens panty liners than to buy the pads for dogs. You just have to hunt for the right size to go into the dog panties use to do that for my old Papillon. Bought 2 Dog cloth diapers put panty liners in them cannot have the pee next to their skin very long or will have skin problems. Also used the waterless dog shampoo by Bio Groom to keep the skin & long hair clean on the Papillion she weighed about 8 # or so, since your girl has short legs may have to go to a smaller size of Dog Panties so she cannot step out of them. For male dogs they have Belly bands to keep them from peeing all over. Good Luck with this problem. Papbouv

Poochadoo:  This sounds like Schatzi is "submissive peeing".  I haven't had any problems with something like this but I am willing to try and help you.  Do you know anything about Schatzi's life before you adopted her?  Could this have anything to do with her prior relationship with men?  I would try and look up "submissive peeing" on the Internet to see what I could find out about it.  You could also try the "Dog Whisperer" website.  I hope something I have suggested helps you.  Would you be able to have your son let you know when he is getting up in the morning and then maybe he could greet Schatzi outside?  Just grabbing at straws here.

Papbouv is on target - Cesar says, "No touch, no talk, no eye contact" when first meeting a new dog or when greeting an already known dog.

I had this problem with, ahem, Dr. Leaky (hence the last name!) and I totally ignored him even if he peed.  Eventually he stopped the peeing.  To get him outside, I just opened the door and walked out.  Now he still assumes the position, but has pretty much stopped peeing.

Good luck!

("On target" - was that a pun?  Oh, that's right, Schatzi's a girl.  That's why I'm switching sexes.)

We have this problem with our Schatzi occasionally when I come home, however she almost always does it when she sees my brother. I agree with the others about the Dog Whisperer site. It is great. She has gotten better around me, and I haven't gotten a chance to have my brother try out the methods yet. I did find Schatzi a cute Pink and Orange shirt in the dollar section at Target that says "I'm so Happy I Could Pee!". That is especially for the next time my brother comes over. A picture will follow soon.

Thanks, all - it sure does sound like "submissive peeing" which is completely natural and something she just can't help.  I'll check out the Dog Whisperer site as he's helped me out in the past.  In the meantime, I'll just keep washing the towels and thanking the Good Lord I have such a wonderful (but "leaky") forever friend.

You're crackin me up!   :2funny:

I agree with the " no touch, no talk, no eye contact Cesar teaches..  Straight out the door to do the duties...Its what we do for our Ceaser,, He has the sprinkles when he gets too revved, he knows he's done wrong,, just can't help it. :doah:
Its best to kneel down to their level instead of towering over them as well, keeps them from going instantly submissive and wetting.
Oh well, better than growling and snapping!!! :thumb:
