Things have gone from bad to worse.  Today was going really well but then when putting her back into her crate from being out to potty today, Zoe screamed in pain and fell onto her side.  Hubby tried to calm her as she kept wimpering and she grabbed his hand in pain (not biting him but letting him know she was hurting).  I was not at home when this happened but had to take my mother to the grocery store.  (I feel bad that I was not at home at the time to comfort her).  I came home right away and could tell that the tramadol and valium were just not doing the trick.  We took Zoe back to the Care Center tonight.  The Vet that we saw yesterday saw her again tonight and stated that Zoe told us we needed to step it up a notch.  She hospitalized her tonight and is calling in the same doctor who performed her surgery two years ago on her back (Dr. Muldoon, who was very very good). Dr. Muldoon will evaluate and perform tests on Zoe in the morning and give me a call to let me know if Zoe requires surgery or not.   Dr. Brown tonight stated that she will stop Zoe from eating and drinking after midnight tonight in case Dr. Muldoon needs to do surgery tomorrow and will place her on some heavy duty pain killers so my baby can get some sleep .  Dr. Brown feels now since Zoe is in so much pain that it could be a pinched nerve in her neck.  She states this could be caused by a disc in the neck that is bulging and pinching it.  It also could be something more simple like a dislocated shoulder, etc.  Zoe is having pain when the neck is turned to the right (the pain is on the left side of the neck when those muscles are stretched to look to the right) and she is also still limping on the left leg and the leg and shoulder are hurting.  Dr. Brown has gone over the leg and shoulder blade several times and can not feel anything wrong.  She stated she will check that again.  They are also going to do x-rays tomorrow.

Please say a prayer for Zoe.  We could use them very much.  This baby girl has been through too much in her short 5 years.....it kills me to see her in such pain.  She has been such a trooper.

We are sending mega rays Zoe's way! I know how hard it is to see her in pain. It is so much for their little bodies to handle but they are such troopers. I know with Penny I just wanted to take the pain on myself so she wouldn't have to feel it. I know you are doing everything you can and we are saying prayers for you, your hubby and Zoe. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help!

Oh no Cheryl I so hate to hear this. Nothing is worse than when our babies are hurting. Like Kari, I too often wish I could take on Hallie's pain, I'm sure we all wish we could do that it is just heartbreaking to not be able to help them. We of course or praying for Zoe and for you too and I hope she will feel better very soon and if she needs surgery, will come though that with flying colors too. I'm sure she will be fine just a huge bump in the road for you both! Hang in there and keep us posted.

Hello everyone.  I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers.  Here is the latest update on Zoe.  She is still in the Care Center for tonight.  They have had her on IV pain medications and are currently starting to do a "step-down" of them.  She has had many neurological exams today and so far they have come back normal.  If she continues to do this well tonight, we may pick her up around noon tomorrow.  They suspect it is a disc in her neck giving her problems (because of the trauma she suffered when she ran into our swing set).  Hubby is blaming himself for this and feels just terrible.  Dr. Muldoon feels that surgery at this point is not needed.  We are to keep Zoe on at least three weeks of strict crate rest with pain medications, anti-inflammatories, and a tummy protector.  Only out to potty and back in the crate.  She is to go back for a check up in about two weeks.  I hate to say it but I am kind of scared to pick her up.  I wish that the Care Center could keep her for three weeks and I could just pick her up after she is all healed up.....does this make sense?  I am just so scared she will hurt her neck again or one of the dogs is going to step on her....I am just so worried about her neck healing and that I might do something wrong to hurt it again....it is such a worry.  The doctors are optimistic that the strict crate rest and medications will give the disc a chance to scar over and heal itself.  Please continue to say prayers for our family and Zoe that all goes well for the next three weeks and we can avoid surgery.  Please pray that hubby and I do everything right for our poor little girl.  Thank you for listening to me.  I don't know what I would do without you all.  It just feels so good to talk to you and get everything out....  God Bless you all, Cheryl

I don't think you are alone in how you feel - those who have been through surgeries and those who have had "episodes" feel the same way.  You will work through figuring out how to pick her up - maybe instead of picking her up alone - pick her up while she is in a small dog bed - gives a little more support.

As far as being around the other dogs - you can control that by being with her when she potties and when she is resting on the couch or your lap - can keep the others away.

We are here to listen and will continue to send rays that she gets better each day !  Please keep us posted....

Cheryl I can totally relate. I was terrified to pick Penny up after we brought her home from her surgery. Drew had been doing the potty trips for the first day and he had to go back to work the next day. He had to force me to do it that night b/c I was going to be the only one home. She would always grunt when I picked her up so it would freak me out. I was so scared of hurting her!
