Marcia from MI

Eddie here, dis morning mom let me about about 5:30 and what do you fink was waiting for me?  A real live bunny he sat straight up, took one look at me and took off behind the garage.  I tried to follow but he was too fast and it was cold.  When I got back to the house mom was laughing at me.

Marcia here,  the bunny has been around all winter, but usually he is is the neighbors yard or Eddie misses seeing him.  But this morning I opened the door and there was Peter sitting not 5 feet from the porch looking at us.  As Eddie went down the ramp Peter took off with Eddie in hot pursuit, but alas Peter was long gone even before Eddie made it to the middle of the yard.  As he ran back to the house Eddie would stop stiff and bark places where Peter had  walked - the dog has no sense of time, but my neighbors do.  Anyway Peter is safe and Eddie settled for a biscuit, for now at least.

On behalf of three Herd members whose dachshund heritage is even more obscure than Merlin and Dr. Leaky's, we'd like to thank Master Edvard for allowing Herr Peter of the Peninsula to escape with his dignity AND his fur intact.

Oh, Eddie! I bet that was sooo much fun! There's much more fun in the chase than in the catch!

Gretchen (accidentally) caught one at one of the field trials. They aren't supposed to even see them but she was so fast that when the judge said to pick up our dogs, we couldn't find her! There were areas for the bunnies to get into that the dogs weren't supposed to fit. Well...she did! Ron (my hubby) had a hold of Gretchen and another guy had a hold of the bunny. Ron was telling her to drop it but she would only move her eyes. I'm glad I missed it.

Ilsa did the same at another field trial. Ron told her to drop it and she immediately let go. Two different dogs - two different temperaments. I do wish Gretch was more like Ilsa, but they are what they are, just like us.

Zeke sometimes give chase to bunnies.   Zora could care less about them.   Rudy was probably the best chaser out of the bunch.   When Rudy and Max worked as a hunter/killer team, they would come close to taking one down.   Max, with the better eyes, could flush out the rabbit, and Rudy, who was considerably quicker, would give chase.

The big problem in dachshund versus rabbit matchups is that the rabbit can change directions faster and turn tighter than a 12 pound dachshund going full bore.   There were times that Rudy would be right on the rabbit's tail and the rabbit would just turn inside of him and leave him in the dust before Rudy could swing himself around.
