Marcia from MI

I wasn't going to post this until later after we see the vet, but I am so anxious right now and my family is not around so.  Monday night Eddie started having problems with his back leg and couldn't get up the ramp so in the crate he went.  Then Tuesday he was having problems staying on his feet so off to the vet we went.  Dr Cindy checked him over and found that he had very poor reflexes in his back legs so after trimming his nails really short she sent us home with Metacam and instructions for crate rest.  This wouldn't be bad except for the fact that we had major snow/ice/rain and Eddie can't go outside to do his business - we are using puppy pads right now.

He is staying in his crate well, however when I take him out to go potty he takes off before I can get his lead on or put him in the carrier to transport him.  He is peeing - even woke me up at 1  AM to take him. His appetite is good and he is catching up on his sitcoms and Law & Order repeats.  The only problem is that he wants to sleep in the big bed so bad that he cries mercilessly when we go to bed.

I'm suppose to take him back today for Dr Cindy to check on him and hopefully there will be some improvement.

Thanks for listening.

Oh my gosh Marcia...I HATE to hear this about Eddie.  Has he had a history of back problems?  It sounds like Dr. Cindy is on the ball when it comes to IVDD.  Thank goodness you are a good mommy and know what to look for.  Please keep us posted.... :comfort: :xfinger:  Prayers coming to you and Eddie!!!

Oh, Marcia! I'm so sorry to hear this! It sounds like you caught it early and hopefully that will give him a good outcome. Please let us know how he does. As Cheryl asked...does he have a history of back problems? I don't remember him having them. What seemed to help Gretchen through her back episodes was a heating pad. Ron would sit in the recliner with her and put it on her. You have to watch it doesn't get too hot, though.

Oh no !  Sending rays to Eddie that rest and meds will take care of it.   Do you have a doggie bed you can put on the big bed beside you?  At least he could be close.  I know when Rudy had his episodes, it was harder on both of us to have him try and sleep in the crate.  I didn't get much sleep because I moved anytime he did - but I let him sleep in the big bed.

Please let us know as soon as you see the vet.  Hang in there mom -

Sending rays for a quick turnaround.  These things always seem to happen on weekends or bad weather.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Solly and I are sending healing rays your way.  We hope Eddie gets all better real soon.  :bandaid: We are all hoping for the best.

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

I don't know what size crate you have, so this might be unrealistic for you, but when I had to crate Winston for his hurt front paw, I put  his crate in the big bed, at the foot of the bed.  He's slept in the big bed since he was a baby, so just crating him on the floor was NOT going to happen.

Check with your vet about adequan shots--its liquid glucosamine. It's a series of shots for a few weeks then just a few a year for maintenance. Also accupuncture has helped a lot of dogs. You may also want to add Ester-C and glucosamine/chondroitine to his diet.
