Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum and new to owning a doxie. Well we recently adopted a doxie from a shelter in Iowa. His name is Oscar and such a sweet boy! But I am wondering what type of doxie he is. I know that he's not standard size. I have read that there are mini's and tweenies. What is the differance? Oscar is a tiny thing just 7lbs I am assuming that he is a mini?
Can you tell me then what type of coat he has meaning what you would call it? He is smooth and red with black running through him from head to tail and his neck (underneath) is more wirey looking. Thanks for all your information in advance! I am so looking forward to learning about this breed.

Welcome!
How old is Oscar?  I have seen that black stripe down the backs of doxies before, not sure what it means.  Do you have a picture of Oscar you could post?

Oscarsmom

Oscar is 9 years old. But I don't have anything downloaded yet to post a picture.
Can someone tell me how to post a picture?

Oscar is definitely a mini.  I believe 10 pounds and over up to about 20 lbs are "tweenies".  My two are 15 and 19 lbs respectively and they are both tweenies.  Standards are usually 20+ pounds.  I have seen red smooths with black "highlights" in them.  Yes, a picture would definitely help.  When you post a message you will notice further down the page the "Attach" area.  You would click on "Browse" and search your computer for any pictures you have save on your computer of Oscar.  Sometimes the pictures will not attach if they are too big.  There are websites that do re-size your pictures for you for free so they will fit on this board.  I hope that helps a little bit.  If you need more help just let us know.

9 years old and 7 lbs.  Yep, he is a mini.  I bet he is really cute.
We can help you post pictures if you have some.  You could always email the picture to one of us and we could post it for you.

Welcome to you and Oscar...   My EmmyLou is a red with the dark line down her back, not quite black though...   I would have to agree here with the others, Oscar is definately a mini....    EmmyLou weighs in at 9 lbs, and she is a little over a year old...   As for the pics, I resize mine at flickr.com, very easy to use...  Can't wait to see pics of Oscar...   Belly rubs...   Here is a photo of EmmyLou, not sure if you can see the line in it or not...  Glad to have you aboard...

Here is a pic of our Penny. She is a red with a dark streak down her back - it isn't black...just darker brown. She is 12.5 lbs and is a tweenie so I would say that Oscar is a mini. Can't wait to see pictures.

11 lbs and under is a mini (at one year of age). Any doxie over 11 lbs is technically a standard, but since most people do not show their standards in the breed ring between roughly 12 and 18 lbs or so (typically) some people refer to this range as "tweenies". Even though they are all really standards over 11 lbs. Tweenie is not an official term like miniature and standard are.

The dark stripe down the back is just a dark overlay, like a red longhair with the black tips on their ears and throughout their coat. It just shows more obviously on a longhair. Many red doxies have this stripe.

So Oscar is a miniature red smooth dachshund.

Congrats on him and bless you many times over for rescueing!! My little Hallie is a black and tan longhaired girl who also came from the animal shelter and she is a wonderful little girl and my heart and soul!

Thanks so much everyone for the replies! Oscar looks just your Penny Kari except he has black down his back and outer edges of his ears. He is such a wonderful little guy! My daughter just loves him she can't give him enough kisses. I will try to post some pictures soonish I need to up load them to our computer first. Thanks again,

Toby man had a pretty pronounced black stripe on his back when he came to live with us but as he has gotten older and he has...ahum...filled out a bit, it seems to have gone away.  He still has the dark "eyeliner" around his eyes and his ear tips.

Here is yet another version of mini red.  Schatzi has a lot of black overlay. She actually seems to get a little darker each year. I just love her coloring.

Welcome to the land of Doxies.

Our Dixie is 9 months old and is about 12 lbs.  (she was supposed to be smaller based on her parents size).  She is the most loving dog we have ever had.   We also never had a Doxie before and didn't really know anyone who had one so this has been such a wonderful experience.  I know you will have a wonderful experience with your little guy.
