when at the vet I asked if Stuart knew of anything that kept snakes out. He said a breeder he knows had lost three dogs to snakes tried this and so far so good. Using zincalume or clear roof sheets cut length wise dug in about 4 inches leaving about knee high above the ground should stop them as they cannot get over, overlap well.
Where we are building is a red bellied blacks and brown snake area, but my sisters horses should keep them at bay, mind you I hae never seen one in about.

Have you tried installing any bird boxes for predators.  Owls wil really clean up your snake problem.  You may also lose a squirrel or two, but don't know if those are a problem in Oz.

Yep, the bears get quite big around here.  We've had a black bear in the parking lot here at work.  How he got here is beyond me because we are in the middle of town.  At home, before I take Willy and Alex out, I do have to check for moose during the winter months.

We have  alocal sea eagle but as we put out a small dog alert when they are in the area I don't see that working.

Okay, so  this is not a suggestion that will help, but one time when we were hiking in bear country (and I always talk EXTRA loud:  "Hey bears, here we come, go away!")  I had to uh, water the flowers.  So afterward, I use this waterless handcleaner that I bought the day before and doesn't it have the most beautiful fruity berry scent that about screamed:  "BEARS!! HERE I AM AND I AM TASTY!  Like a BLUEBERRY FRUITCUP come and eat me!"  Scared the poop outta me until I could wash it off in the stream.

p.s. and I HAVE seen a Moose and it was like a VW beetle on stilts.  Terryfyinly huge.

He probably took the #5 bus.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Found this:

Useful ways to keep snakes away:

...Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property.
...Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges.
...Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.
...Use funnel type traps or glue board type traps along edges.
...An extreme remedy would be a perimeter wide fence sloping outward at a 30 degree angle.

Also, they do sell stuff to repel snakes....    http://www.snakestop.com/  which is safe for pets, people and livestock apparently.   I didnt know it existed til I did a lil research... ill be buying it by the gallon in summer time... I highly dislike those nasty creatures.  (sorry reptile lovers!!)
