Sean and I have both had dachshunds before that like to cuddle wherever your sitting and sleep all night by your side.  Hansy was kennel trained by his foster mom and in the 4 years we've had him he's loved his kennel. In fact he loves it so much, that he thinks every kennel is his and immediately invades any kennel he finds and if the dog tries to go into it's own kennel he growls at them aggressively, and he's normally a very good natured little boy and patient.   Anyway, the only time he's ever slept with us all night is when we were camping and we even lugged his kennel and put it in the tent and everything, my guess is that it was too cold for him to want to sleep anywhere else.  He loves to love us, be loved and give us snuggles, but he seems to reach a time limit after so long and takes off.  This doesn't seem like normal dachshund behaviour, at least the dachshunds we've lived with and known. Does anyone have any ideas for training or why he is this way?

I would have to say it is just his training and he really feels safe in his (and others !) little cave.   Some humans like to always be around people and some like solitude.  Although most of us have velcro doglets.....Hans just likes his me time !!!!!    My Rudy is not a big cuddler - unless he is worn out or not feeling well.....he just has too much to be doing to always cuddle with mama !!!!  Brandy is my cuddler....if I carried her in a front pack all day, she would happy as a little clam !!!!

Our Ladybug was like that. We even got rid of the kennel to see if that changed her behaviour...it didn't.

Only in the last year of her life did she give up her solitary bed and join the humans.  We don't know if she finally felt safe...or was it the warmth of the human body...

I wouldn't worry about it.  Sometimes, I wish ours were a little less "velcro dogs"!  Like this week when we are doggy sitting for friends and there are 4 dogs (2 doxies, 1 Japanese Chin and 1 Chichuahua) on the sofa and in the bed!  The humans have to leave to get a little peace

You know I was thinking more about this since I posted. I was worried that Hansy's lack of long term cuddles might be an insecurity thing, or that maybe he didn't feel comfortable enough with us to be a cuddle attachment, but the more I think about it the more I realize that isn't true.  I realized he snuggles more in instances where he would likely be insecure. Like he loves to sleep on my lap in the car, or snuggle up for a while after I've given affection to another dog.  Actually, when we went to the interview for adoption for him he fell asleep on my lap and stayed there almost the entire visit and the foster mom seemed surprised that he was already so comfortable with me. Of course that only confirmed he was meant to be, even though I kind of already knew before I met him.  I guess because we're at home most the time or at my parents where he's also very comfortable I didn't think about that. Maybe he's normally too proud for cuddling long term.

We have never slept with our lot, high beds etc plus they need a space of their own. Emma our oldest(15+) has never till the last year wanted to spend time getting cuddled, you actually were allow a cuddle when she felt like it and on her terms. She was also very Alpha. She still has her camp Emma as we call it a soft sided bed she can go, all the others were and are cuddlers and all brought up the same.

I have fostered over 200 doxies and all I can say it they are all different. I find similar traits in some but for the most part they are truly all individuals. My own two are both kennel dogs. Tofu came from the humane society with very little history. I never had a use for a kennel with him until we travel with him and he acted like he had one all his life and maybe he did. When I moved a crate in to the bed room for a foster Tofu took over. He always comes to bed for snuggles and then goes to the crate for sleeping. He's like that at night when we are watching TV. He comes and gets snuggles and the goes and lays on the daybed in front of the window. Siggy has been  a crate baby from day one but when it comes to bed time he between my legs or dad and I. If you pick up a crate though he's in it. If I move one from one area of the house to the other he's in it. When we travel they always travel in their crates. I am sure this didn't help:) but maybe gives you a little more insight.
