And I mean the nice new modern type. FINALLY after almost 6 years of dealing with the "camp stove" that came with our mobilehome, I'm replacing it! I definitely want self cleaning (don't have it now), digital readout(don't have it now), burner grates that touch each other (so pots don't fall off the burners).

Options I'd like to consider is the 5 burner option, and/or the one with the monster burner (boils water lickety split) and simmer burner (baby burner). I fancy the idea of a griddle in the middle and I'd like a decent size oven. Convection doesn't matter to me, because I've never used one, so I don't know what I'm missing.

It must be gas, as, if I plugged an electric one in, it would probably short-circuit my whole house. This place is whimpy in the power dept.

So....after all that wind, here's my request. If anyone has recently bought a new range and LOVE it or HATE it, let me know the "why I should buy or stay away." Right now, I'm leaning toward the Maytag brand but am open to other options. I don't want to spend any more than $800.00.

Lookin' forward to your reviews.

Mike

can't give any reviews, but do you have a Sears scratch and dent store in your area?  Can get some decent prices there for floor models or customer returns with minimal cosmetic wear.

I have a friend who has one like that. The whole family loves it, especially her husband, the cook in the family!! I think theirs is by Frigidaire. You'd think I would remember since I just saw it last night. There's was electric, though, so I will do some research for you and see if they make it in the gas version. I was wondering what you were talking about when you said a "simmer burner". Now I know, and those are cool!!!

And what did we end up with.....drumroll.....scheduled for delivery next Saturday? Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

A Bosch free standing range with convection, self cleaning, continuous grates and easy dial a knob (verses pushing lots of buttons) simplicity. The dial was a big thing for me because I found on most other models, I could hardly read the print on the buttons to be pushed, which were on the back of the stove. Maybe if I had special-ordered in Braille, it might have worked. Yes, the knobby technology will really work for me. It converts automatically in temp and in time when using convection, which is wonderful for the math challenged, such as myself. I can hardly wait to give it a good testdrive.

Next question!

Who has used a convection oven? (this one has both conventional and convectional). Pro and cons? I can't wait to see how a roast does. Golden and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside?

When my husband and I bought our first house, the elderly lady we bought it from had just gotten a new Jenn-air stove/oven.    She kindly left it for us "kids just starting out."  It was a convection oven.  For the first two months of our marriage, I burned EVERYTHING i cooked in that thing!!!    :doah:

The only advice i can give, after stuggling with it for a year, is ignore everything the labels on food items say about cooking time!  I usually started by cooking anything for 8 minutes, checking it, and then cooking it for 2 minutes at a time and checking it until it is done.  Sorry I can't give any better advice.  That is the only way I didn't burn anything!!   Hope my silly advice does help some.  Hopefully you'll get better advice from the others.

Congrats on your new stove !!!  We have a convection oven here at work - but I don't use it and really don't know what the differences are..... I am sure you will be loaded up with literature when you get it !!!

Congratulations. I'm glad you found what you were looking for. I say read, read, read! My mom had an oven once that had convection with it, and rarely used the feature. I think it is a matter of learning to use it. I would start reading online now, and by the time you get the stove and start reading the literature that comes with it, it should all make more sense. You'll be cooking up a storm, I'm sure!!

You all call things diffrently over the big pond. The large ring in the middle over here is a Wok burner. I take it the oven has a fan forced option, if so its great. Tends to speed things up and the temp is even throughout the oven. Just remember to drop the temp about 50C and it may take less timeif you are used to times on conventional.
I use iven bags a lot hence you don't have to worry about meat drying up and the oven stays clean.
