As you know Sam is going to be 16 on November 26, and the senior wiener of the group.  Well, he really gave me a scare yesterday and I thought we were going to lose him.  It started Sunday night around 9 PM Sam was coming up the couch ramp to join me and he just stopped.  He then got on the couch and threw up, not really unusual he has a sensitive tummy.  But then things got worse.  He just sat on the couch staring off into space and acted like he didn't hear me when I called him.  At bedtime he refused his cookie and just lay on the bed staring.  Needless to say I was up most of the night with him, finally we went to sleep on the couch and I did get a couple hours of sleep.  He even refused to eat smelly old cat food(not good)

Monday morning he was no better so off to Dr Cindy's for a check up.  She did a blood test and stool check both negative - he did have diharrea(sp).  So we went home with meds and instructions for him to rest.  When we got home Sam slept for most of the afternoon and then decided he wanted yogurt (good).  I crated him for awhile until he got some of his strength back and by bedtime he demanded his cookie.  Sam slept in his crate last night.

Today he is still a bit out of it, but is eating, drinking and walking better.  Now maybe I can catch up on sleep, oh wait today I have my volunteer work to do.  Sam says forget it for today I want to cuddle.

And Eddie?  He was so worried about Sam that after the vet visit he followed Sam all over the house and even made sure the cats stayed away from the crate.  Now they are both sleeping so I guess I'll nap.

That's so scary...I'm glad Sam seems to be feeling better now.  Love and rays coming from Scooter and me...

It's all part of the senior rollercoaster.  These guys will scare you and then shake it off like nothing ever happened.  I was there with Max a number of times.   Hugs and rays to Senior Sam, and to Eddie for being such a good brother, too.

It sounds to me like a dachshund T.I.A.  It's like a mini stroke.  I had one in April after hand surgery.  At age 16, it wouldn't be so suprising.  Ask your vet about it.

I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."

Hi everyone,

Sam is doing better and back to eating.  Karen, the vet has said it is probably mini strokes, but as long as he can function he'll be OK.  The good thing is that we both love to take naps and as we all know snuggling with dachsies is the best.

PattyInAK

Marcia, please keep us posted on Sam.  Hugs to you both!

sollysmom

Solly and I are sending lots of  your way.  We lost our girl, Heidi last year to a stroke and we will keep  :xfinger: that nothing more happens.

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

Guinness says:

"Hey there Sammy, you're a dachshund I can look up to!  Feel good and take it easy. We senior citizens gotta keep all them puppers and hoomans in line, right?  it's a tough job, being top dog!"
