Momma has set up a ramp to the couch for us and it is really cool.  The best thing about it is that momma has the floor blocked off so we don't jump  off the couch, but that means she has to move stuff in front off the couch.  So we back mom into the one corner of the couch and don't let her leave unless we get a treat or a taste if she's eating something. 

Marcia here - the boys have really taken to the ramp very well.  All it took was a handful of treats and a lot of praise for them to learn.  Sam learned very quickly and would keep going up and down the ramp to get more treats.  Eddie still has his moments, but when he does go up the ramp he will sit or lay on the couch and block Sam's way onto the couch, but Sam will walk right passed him and sit by me.

Today the couch next week the big bed - we will practice next week so both can get back to sleeping in the big bed and keep mom warm this winter.

Clever boys!  Leave it to the dachsies to figure out a way to use the ramp to their advantage!

Smart little guys, lol........sorry if this sounds stupid, but what is the ramp for?  Is it bad for them to jump on furniture?  I don't own a dachsie, but am considering and just trying to gain information.  Thanks  :idiot:

Because dachsies have long backs they are prone to back problems which can cause paralysis.  However, not all dachsies suffer from back problems, but you can never be too careful.  So we try to prevent them from jumping off furniture and doing things that would put undue stress on their backs.  Both of my guys had problems with their backs, but luckily both are better due to crate rest and meds. 

When I had my back porch redone I had a new step put in, but then Eddie suffered a back problem and I had my porch guy rip out the step and replace it with a cement ramp.  Now I put a ramp up to the couch because Eddie has decided to start his jumping tricks again.  And since withholding Greenies didn't work I had to try the ramp and it does work.

My explanation is probably confusing and doesn't make sense.  Maybe someone else on the board can explain it better.  But I will say I would never trade my boys for any amount of money.
