I am new the board (use to be on a few years ago), but Missy, my 1 year and half tan smooth, is having some back pain.  She was favoring her left back leg when we were walking the other night.  I was hoping she had a sticker or something in her paw and that was all, but she is still having some problems.  At only a year and half and slender, and we keep her in a pet cage during the day when we work, (to keep her from jumping) I didn't think we would have to worry about back pain for a long time, but I can remember when the vet last year saying that Missy really looked good (weight wise) and said that some dachsunds start having back problems as early as a year and a half.

All this after we had to have our Dutchess (black and tan smooth) put dowm because of her back legs were paralized.  I grew up with 2 dachsunds and knew other family members and neighbors with dachsunds and NONE of them had back pain.  Therefore we didn't realize the danger of letting Dutchess jump and have full access to the house during the day while we worked.  Then around age 5 she started with back pain and had a few more bouts with the back and then she lost feeling in her back legs.  When we got Missy we made a good effort from keeping her from jumping and keeping her in a cage during the day, but missy got the back pain 3 and half years before Dutchess that was always jumping. I guess you never know.

Poor Missy.  I can't give any advice but I sure can send dachsie rays your way.  Please let us know her progress and what the vet says.  Wish this was a happier welcome back.

We just went through back surgery with our 4 year old Penny. You can find all my posts by searching by my name and I hope the information helps. Have you made an appt with the vet or neurologist? I would reccomend doing that as soon as possible. Please keep us updated!

So sorry to hear that Missy is having back pain.  Zoe, my 4 yr old has made a 95% recovery from surgery last August for her back.  She was completely paralyzed....If you have never heard of www.dodgerslist.com, please go there and join.  There are numerous articles, files, and people there who have had this problem and can help.  Also, please place Missy on crate rest 24/7, and carry her out to potty....only let her move around enough to potty and then back in the crate.  This should be done for 6 to 8 weeks.  As Kari mentioned, her Penny had surgery recently and Penny is doing well.  I agree with Kari, please get Missy to your Vet or a Neurologist asap!!!

Yes, find a good vet neurologist.  Cookie had surgery (2 days after Penny!) and she is walking again.  The sooner they can start treating her the better the chance of recovery.
Best of luck!  I hope she gets better soon.
