this is so dumb. but i think this is the place to talk about it.
chloe goes into to be spayed friday and im worried about her being ok.
I know its for the best. my husband and I talked about her having puppies but we really cant afford it. I hate closing the door on that. she so cute. (at least to me anyways) that I would like to see what her puppies would have looked like. and of course would love to keep them all! but from all the research ive done it sounds dangerous. and expensive.

so im doing the right thing right?

In my opinion, you are doing the right thing.  It is the best thing health wise for your baby girl.  Of course you will be worried sick the day she goes in for the surgeries...all mommy's are !   She will come through it fine.  Have they done the pre-surgery bloodwork?  I would be sure this is done.  LEt us know when she goes in and we will wait very impatiently for the word from the vet !

Yeah, what Barb said!   :thumb:

Seriously, it is natural to be worried about your little girl.  She will be fine.  And we're here for you to turn to, especailly on that day when you will want to post about everything:  when you drop her off, how you are feeling, when the vet calls to tell you the surgery went fine, and when you go to pick her up and take her back home.  In other words, we will be with you every step of the way!

It is natural to worry about your furkid especially when they under-go any kind of surgery whether routine or not. I have spayed lots of dogs and cats over the years and I have never had any complications that a e-collar wouldn't fix  :2funny: ... if this will be her first time undergoing anesthesia then you might opt for the pre-op bloodwork just for peace of mind.
Unless your girl is a superior representative of the breed standard (not just cute they are ALL cute aren't they?) and you are willing to take the risk of loosing her during the whelping then spaying her is the most kind loving gift you can give her. Each time a female goes through a heat cycle her body produces hormones over time this can contribute to mammary tumors and infections such as pyometria (where the uterus fills will puss.. not pretty and deadly!)   :badidea:

I am sure your girl will be just fine and everyone on the board will be here for you while you wait... and after a couple days she will be back to her old self and you will be glad you did it.

Don't worry she should be fine, have the bloodwork done first.  Talk to your vet about the type of anesthesia they will use, ask questions, please ask if your vet is used to doing surgery on dachshunds, they tend to need less than many breeds, and also if they are experienced in anesthesia with small doglets!   Meeko my shepard still has stcihes from her last surgery, removing turmors.  That was her second and she has one more to go.....no cancer thank god!  We talked first about inhaled verus intravenius anesthesia and decided what would be best for a 10 year old dog and had the blood work done!  She came through fine both times and did fine as a young dog when we spayed her!  A note...if your vet does not have staff overnight there to care for the dogs, bring her home same day, so you can watch her!  Good luck!

She will be fine, but if you  worried I held Amy till the first muscle relaxan worked, so she went to sleep seeing me, and the vet phoned asap time to take her home. so she had her mum there when she fully came round.
We'll be thinking of her. Emma  Ingrid and Amy were raring to go a day or two later.

Lucy had puppies back in December. Believe me, it is not all it is cracked up to be. It is a very hard and time consuming job!!!!
As soon as she was ready, she was spayed. She is a happy pupper now. And no more messes when she is in heat.
Your baby will be fine during surgey. I worried all day long about Lucy but she was in good hand. I completly trusted the vet. She came out of surgery with flying colors. Your pupper will too. Keep us updated and let us know how it goes

happy to report that chloe made it fine. shes so out of it from the medication but she was alot better today then she was yesterday. we had a hard night she just couldnt get comfortable. she has to wear a soft collar so she doesnt like the stiches. we were hoping she would leave them alone, but no way!
thanks for all the support :apls:

GREAT to hear she is ok. We all go through the spay/neuter terrors I think...it feels good to have it behind you.

I'm right there with you.  Glad she is doing ok.  I will be in your shoes next week.  I take Minna in on Tuesday for her spay.  My vet likes to keep them overnight, just to be sure there are no problems.  They have a vet tech there at all times and the vet lives very close by his office.  I will get to pick her up Wednesday morning and I am taking off work from Wednesday until Monday to be with her.  So next week will be my turn to be a nervous wreck (even though it is not the first one of my girls to go thru this).

Nikki thats good that you are taking time off to be with your precious pup. we will be thinking of you.

thanks for all the words of encouragement. its been about a week and chloe seems to be coming around but its taken all this time. she has diarrhea. is this normal? i called the vet they said if she still has it to bring her in saturday. shes off the pain medcine. but it has us worried. shes eating her food ok and drinking her water. can i give her rice to calm her tummy? she goes at least four to five a day.

thanks for any information

April

If you've taken her off her pain meds and she's still having poo problems then you might want to try giving some plain rice mixed in with her food, or just rice for one meal to see if that helps any.  I've been through it with tummy troubles with Cajsa and it normally works for her.  You could let her have the rice until Saturday if it seems to be working.  I would avoid other treats though so they can't irritate.

Annie, April is right.  The rice binds the bowels and works for humans too!  Be very careful as small dogs can go south quick from losing too much fluid from the runs.  Meeko, my shepard has had 2 recent surgeries for turmors.  She did well and recovered quickly, but did get some runs.  I was told it could be a reaction to the stress of the surgery, a reaction to the pain meds, or a reaction to the anesthesia.
I'm sure she'll be just fine and this time next week, it will all be just a memory!  She is eating and drinking, just give her lots of loving!
One of my son's years ago, went through a terrible bought of the run's after a minor surgery!  Keep in touch with the vet, and we send our prayers, love and doxie kisses to you!  :sunny: :hkiss:
