Happy New Year and  hey, Sergeant and Lt. Louie!  I, Brekke, dainty little dachsie princess, have killed my first rabbit!  I dunno if it was rascally or not, but it was eatin' some of my momma's plants when I was out on patrol and once I finally noticed it, I gave chase!  It took me about 7 minutes from the beginning of the actual pursuit to kill it.  My daddy threw it over the fence for the hawks to take care of, for me, 'cause I didn't really want to eat it, and Momma was sayin', "Ewww - yuck!  Don't eat it - you don't know where it's been!"  So I had my usual Solid Gold kibble and canned with vitamins.  Daddy says he'll take me huntin' with him, anytime!  I am gonna have a great 2007 - you do the same!  :thumb:

:thumb:  Way to go, Mighty Huntress, Brekke!  We (Sarge & Looie) are so very proud of you!  That is so kewl that you got your first rabbit.....they shouldn't be eating your momma's plants!  We are still working on getting the rascally rabbits here -- our problem is that they sneak through the holes in the cyclone fence! We're just waiting for the big guy to come in the yard....he can't fit through the holes..he can only fit under the gate area....and if he is in the yard and Mom or Pop are outside with us....they'll block the gate so he can't get out!  Then we'll get him!!

We're very very proud of you, Brekke.  You can come hunting with us anytime you want to!  We'd be proud to have a girrrlll on our team!

AS they just said WAY to GO........................Funny you think they would not know what to do if they saw a rabbit, but it is amazing when instinct kicks in.

We have a rabbit in our yard who sits out in the open right next to the house.  I used to wonder about its lack of concern or concealment until I saw how our mighty "hunters" deal with it.  When we let them out, Skeeter sometimes gives a half-hearted chase and the rabbit will half-heartedly run, but it does not usually leave the yard  In the meantime Boone completely ignores it or wanders around with both doxie and bunny totally unconcerned about the other.  I think Skeeter is just playing as we have seen her go after rats, and she is a silent, fast death machine.  I believe she sees no threat to the pack from the rabbit  (even though it to eats momma's plants) and treats it accordingly.  They might even be playing.  You gotta love them doxies!  And we do.  Happy New Year to everyone!

I found when Rudy & Max only half-heartedly chased something, it was because they knew they couldn't catch it.   The most likely target for a half-hearted chase was birds.   Long ago, Rudy & Max realized that they couldn't catch a bird, so the best they could do was to do a half-hearted chase to get them to fly off.   In his later years, Max went from chasing squirrels, to the half-hearted feints towards them, to finally just taking a "live and let live" approach, to the point where one time on our deck, Max was trotting back in and a squirrel was heading in the opposite direction and they both just ignored each other, like two ships passing in the night.

It's too early to tell what kind of predatory instincts Zora and Zeke have, but it seems like neither one is overly interested in chasing wildlife.   Other dogs, yes, but squirrels tend to warrant little attention at this point.   The squirrels, on the other hand, definitely seem to be a bit more cautious in our yard now that the new sheriffs are in town.

Congratulations Ms Brekke!!!!  I've no doubt that word will get around the rabbit community and they will start avoiding your yard.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Good job girl !!!!  We have a couple rabbits that live on our block and pop up every so often while we are walking.  My two take off after them.......but are on leash - so they don't get close.

Oh, wow, Brekke! Who would have thought?! Gretchen and Ilsa send their congrats and high fours. They really are amazing when that instinct kicks in. Both Gretchen and Ilsa have caught a bunny at field trials. Gretchen refused to let go - only her eyes would dart side to side. It took Ron holding Gretchen and another guy holding the rabbit and each pulling, for her to let it go. I'm glad I wasn't there. I didn't know rabbits scream, but they do. Ilsa, bless her heart, spit hers out as soon as Ron told her to 'drop it.'
