Penny is a  small "tweenie" and weighs in at 12 lbs. Our trainer always used to tell is that if you look down at their backs you should see in indention before the hips start. I don't know if that is true or not, but it has been a good guide for us. When Penny has been fluffier around 13 lbs I can't see the indention, but at 12 lbs I can.

Really depends on her frame size.  Hallie stays around 11.5 and 12 lbs and she is always a touch underweight, which is where I want to keep her for back stuff. You can easily feel every rib (she's not anywhere near emaciated!!!) and she has a pronounced tuck up and indent behind the ribs.

You should be able to feel the ribs and there should be a waist behind the ribs/in front of the hips.  You shouldn't be able to SEE the ribs just looking at the dogs though.  Feeling them easily by running your hand down either side of the spine is how to tell.

I always liken it that the dachsie trunk looks more "banana" shaped from the side.   Dacshie weights tend to run all over the place.   Zora and Zeke are supposed to be minis, but they are about 14 and 15 pounds, respectively.   Zora is still about 1 pound heavier than she should be, and Zeke is about 1 - 2 pounds lighter than I would like him to be.   I always thought minis were 11 pounds and below.  Of all my dachsies, Max was probably the only "true" mini of the bunch, and he was right on the line at 11 pounds.

Thanks to everyone that replied well you can't feel her ribs so guess she is too Fluffy will have to cut back again on her food, Not sure what is up but she jumped up on her Daddy's bed left a wet spot so guess she is mad about something she had not been able to jump up on the bed until the other day.I have tried to get her to where she will not jump up on the furniture but I think it is a lost cause she does what she wants.Guess it is good she can not jump up on my bed its 28" off the ground I have a spare diaper if she is not careful she will be wearing it.Have new carpet the first in 30 years so not going to mess around with her she & Gizmo may be the diaper twins before you know it. Have heard that Doxie's can be spiteful but allot of the training books say dogs are not spiteful???
