 Hi all,
Some of you may recall that we lost our angel Toby in July. Our hearts were broken but we knew even then that Toby would want us to fina another Dachie owner to love. Browsing the Dachshund Club of Victoria website here in Oz, we saw that Lucky aka "Sewlowdax Mista Luckman" was looking for a new forever home. I called Margaret, Lucky's owner and she told me that someone else was interested in Lucky but that they also had a large Labrador Retriever and she wasn't convinced that he and Lucky would get along. They didn't! The Lab bit Lucky who bit back harder. Underestimate a Dachie at your own risk!
We drove to Mebourne from Adelaide (about 460 miles) to meet Lucky and we fell instantly in love with him, and he with us. Turns out that he is a champion dog who has tested positive as a PRA carrier. Margaret did the responsible thing and had him neutered and then made the painful and courageous decision to part with Lucky rather than leave him at home when they took their other Dachies to shows. Meanwhile we had bought a Maltese Shih-Tzu puppy who we called Harry so we now have Lucky as well and the two puppies are getting along well. Our lives are full, and I think Toby would be pleased.
Take a look at the photos. Who couldn't love a face like that?

Regards to all
Steve

Wow, he is beautiful, or maybe I should say Handsome-sorry Lucky-and he is truly Lucky to have such great new owners. Also I'm glad his former owner cared enough to not want to leave him alone while traveling and also to not breed irresponsibly.
I loved your line about not underestimating Dachsie! They are small, but determined to protect themselves and all they love. I'm sure you and your family have many fun times to look forward to with your new four-legged additions.
We will look forward to hearing more from the land of Oz! Roberta will be thrilled to have someone else reporting from there!

What a handsome guy!  Congratulations, Lucky, for finding a great forever home.  I love the second picture - his bearing and the look in his eyes says it all.

He is very gorgeous and very favored to get a forever home where his people will spoil him as he deserves!   What a nice coat he has, and I love the color!  I have to get my red hair from the colorist!

You got a really beautiful dog!!! :thumb:
It is wonderful to hear that he has a responsible breeder, who made the heartbreaking decision to neuter him when she found out he carried PRA.   :thumb:  And then to make the decision to put him in a home where he is going to be so loved. It is so hard to let the pups go, but it harder to let go of one who you have so much time and love & hope invested in!!!
I know you are really going to enjoy this pup.

Lucky says thanks for your good wishes folks. Margaret says Lucky actually chose us by the way he jumped up to say hello when we first met him. She says he only ever does that with people he reallylikes and trusts so she knew than that he'd be OK. The deal was that if he didn't settle in within two weeks, he'd go back to Margaret and find somone else. We have Harry, our Maltese Shih-Tzu cross puppy and three cats so it was always going to be interesting. The first time Lucky met Harry, Harry came up to say hello before we could stop him and Lucky grabbed his snout and would not let go! I can't believe the strength of those little jaws! Surprisingly though, Lucky drew no blood (except mine when I tried to separate them) so he must have been holding on just enough to say to Harry "go away, I'm not ready for you!" We had a similar incident with an ear the next day and were a little worried although, once again, no blood was spilt (not even mine!). My wife, Debbie was ready to send him back, but I wasn't convinced. In the first place he showed no aggressiveness toward the cats, even though he'd never lived with cats before, and when we took him around to meed Ellie, our friends' female mini long hair, they got on like old frends from the moment they met.
Well, perseverence pays because Lucky now lets Harry puppy jump him, grab his ears and all those other annoying puppy things and just growls to put Harry back in his place. The cats even come and say hello, and Lucky is actually teaching Harry good habits like going outside, instead of to the newspaper. With two babies for us to cuddle and play with in the morning, the whole household is a happier place. I pity people who dont have dogs! They miss out on so much love and FUN! We'll never stop missing Toby, he taught us to love the Dachie breed, but we really feel blessed to have Lucky and Harry both.
They really are the Christmas present that never stops giving.

Love to all
