I took the Zs to our vet for the first time today.  They needed their toes chopped and the vet just wanted to give them the once over.

When I broke out their harnesses, they were excited.  When I opened the car door, they became even more excited.  When I tried to put them into a traveling crate....well, they didn't want to go in and they planted their heels.   I had to lift them up and shove them in.  It's a short ride (less than 10 minutes) to the vet, but it took them nearly all of that for the two of them to find a position that they were both comfortable with.

They immediately knew they were at a vet.   As soon as I opened the door to go inside, both dug in their heels and didn't want to go in.  The Zs both hopped up on my lap while I waited.  Zeke began to bark at a painting of a cat!  There was a real cat there in its crate, but they ignored it.

When we were taken back, both went back willingly.  I gave them the history of the two of them.  Then the vet came in.   Zora was first up to be examined.  While the vet was examining Zora, Zora was calm, but Zeke began whining away, almost a "sympathy whine".   The only time Zora got excited was when the toe chopper cut a bit too close.  I was just amazed at how far those nails fly when they get chopped.   When it was Zeke's turn, Zora began the sympathy whining.   Zeke has the added insult of needed to get his butt squeezed, too.

Overall, the vet was impressed with the demeanor and the overall condition of the Zs.   Zeke tipped in weight-wise in the high 14s, Zora was the low 14s, with probably one more pound to shed.  He seemed a bit concerned about Zeke's coat, or lack thereof.   Yamisi told us that the loss of hair is not uncommon in blues like Zeke.   The vet agreed, but given the dachsie's propensity for thyroid issues, a blood test may not be a bad idea.  I agreed, but I'm going to wait until his annual exam in May when they are going to draw blood anyway rather than put him through a specific blood test.

Soon, we were done.  I've long learned how to do the "vet office shuffle", where you hold two dachshunds with one hand, and then learn how to fumble through your wallet for the credit card and sign the receipt with the other hand.   The Zs were busy sniffing and greeting the next set of customers (who were fortunately only picking up meds and without their pets).   I'd say after one visit that the Zs have quicky endeared themselves to the vet staff!

Good to hear David. The sympathy whine is something OLiver does VERY well, plus the leg climb.
I did try once to take all three in, and nver done it again, but I don't think I've met anyone that these guys can't worm ther way into their hearts.

I love that - the Doxie Shuffle !!!  I have long since learned to stick my credit card in my pocket before going in and I use my debit card so I don't have to sign anything !!!  Normally Brandy is crawing up my leg so I am holding her - and Rudy is exploring all over the reception area !!!

Glad the Z's checked out - let us know how the test goes for Zeke's coat - very interesting !

Sure would like to see some pics of the Z's and Jessica !

It's tough to get piccys these days.  Jessica is in her "I don't want anyone taking pictures of me" phase, so as soon as I break out the camera, she runs for the hills or turns her back or gets upset.  I'll try to post some recent pictures of the Zs soon.

Glad to hear the Z's are well!  Anyone want to volunteer to take my trio to the vet for me???  Its chaos to try and take 3 at the same time and I've been trying to work up the gumption to do it early and get it over with though they aren't due until January.

Glad they both got a clean bill of health.  My girls are the same way.  They KNOW when they're at the groomer or vet.  They know how to really dig in and NOT MOVE.

Hi David,

I saw your post and just wanted to let you knkow that both of the Z's had their thyroid checked last year and all was well. I will get a copy of the results. You may want to check it again in May when they get their other blood work, but I wanted to let you know that I had it checked for both of them.

I'm glad the Zs did well at the vet. They love to ride in the car and recognize the word bye-bye. I didn't realize until logging in that my screen name isn't quite right anymore. Hope all is well. Say hello to Margie and Jessica for me and of course give the Zs a kiss from me.

Yamisi, you will always be Zora & Zeke's mom.  A lot of their good temperament and excellent training came from the care you gave them.

The only accidents we've had in the house have been from me "rough housing" with them and they get so excited that the squirt a few drops.   I'm particularly astounded how long Zora can hold her bladder...longer than many larger dogs.

The two of them seem to have settled in.  Zora has become more of a "Daddy's Girl" now and Zeke, likewise is attaching himself to Margie.   On Thanksgiving Day, we all took a nap.  Zora snoozed atop me and Zeke snoozed on Margie.  Zora and Jessica have a game they play now...it's kind of a reverse fetch.  Jessica brings Zora her squeaky toy.   Zora gently takes it and then goes and sets it down in the room.  Jessica gets the sqeaky toy and brings it back to Zora.

Oh, check out the piccys on the "The Day After" thread!

Yamisi - so good to see you here - please know that we all are thinking of you and our hearts ache with you in having to place your babies.  You couldn't have found a better home and you, along with the Z's will always be part of our WW family - please keep in touch !!  Hugs to you!
