Benign!

We heard back from the vet this morning--and had very good news! Boone's biopsy report is benign!

For those who may have missed it, Boone had a dental Monday of last week. At the time, Dr. Goode noticed a small growth on Boone's face, and he called us to get permission to remove the growth while Boone was under the anesthetic. These vascular growths are called hemgiomas. Most are benign, but some are not. If they are on organs such as the liver or spleen, they are nearly always cancerous, and a few of the facial growths turn out to be cancer as well. The cancerous growths are hemangiosarcomas, which is what Leopold had. Although I dreaded the idea of going through that same cancer again so soon after losing Poldie, I agreed that it was best to do the biopsy and find out.

The last week was pins and needles, but we are doing our happy dance again!

That is a relief. What do these growths look like?

Boone's growth was small, maybe 3/8" across, fleshy and bluish in color, but I saw a dog at the Mid-Atlantic Dachsund Phest that had a considerably larger one that was a bit bigger than a pencil eraser. These are vascular growths, so they take on the color of blood, and can be blue, red or purple tinged.

They are nearly always benign when on the skin, but nearly always cancerous when located on organs.

That is great news, what a relief! Nothing is more torturous than waiting for results on something like this. So happy it was nothing to worry about!

What a relief! Heidi-Angel had a couple - one was almost on her breastbone and about the size of the last joint on your thumb, and she had a smaller one about the size of a pencil eraser on her right side, just below the rib cage. I kept a close eye on them for about 6 months. The larger one could be moved around, like a bit of stuffing in a comforter. When she had her next dental, I asked the vet to remove them - they were both subcutaneous fat deposits, thank goodness! Rays to Boone to recover quickly from his owies!
