Mike

otherwise known as Clifford.  Friday morning I noticed a pea-sized lump under his right eye.  Friday night it was a little bigger.  He didn't mind me touching it.  it was firm on the edges and softer in the center.

Saturday morning I called the vet's office to see if we could get (we're 2 months late on our yearly checkup and the rabies shot was due 3 weeks ago - oopss).  Nope, all booked, but we could come in and go to emergency (for 3 times the $$$$).  Well, as long as the lump wasn't hurting him I just made an appointment for Monday after work.  Unfortunately our regular vet (a former dachsie owner) is on vacation so we are seeing someone else.  Monday morning the lump is the size of a marble.

Sending lots of Rays!!!   I just hate lumps and bumps... they make you think scarey things, then turn out to be nothing  (just fat, in Frankys case).

We're back from the Vet.  She felt all over his lump and after trying to lift his lip to look at his teeth decided a tongue depressor would do a better job.   :angry1:    Sooooo, he has an absessed tooth (right next to the one that was pulled 15 months ago).  Wednesday he will have the tooth pulled and life will return to normal.

Clifford:  "Hey, that crunchy peanut butter was pretty tasty.  Ya got another one?"

How's Cliffie doin'?      comin' your way.

Mike

Thanks, for asking.  Dad took me in on Wednesday and I took a long nap.  When I woke up I was missing 2 teeth and the big lump on my cheek was gone!!!!  I kinda snoozed most of the night, but I'm pretty much back to form now.

Mike:  in addition to the tooth with the big absess, there was another tooth that need to come out.  They also found a couple of absesses forming on 2 teeth on the other side of his mouth.  Hopefully, the antibiotic will take care of those nasty things.  I was pleased the vet drained the protusion and Clifford now will sport a jaunting little dueling scar on his cheek.  I'll give him an eyepatch and he can be a pirate for Halloween!!

On a serious note, do any of you know whether tooth brushing in the future will help keep absesses from forming?  That will be a fun thing to start at age 12....

I was thinking this morning that we never heard from your dad yesterday - thanks for posting this morning !  Glad that you are now on the mend - nothing worse than a bad tooth - or two !!!!  Take care - smoochies to Clifford !!!

Mike - not sure that brushing would keep his teeth from abcessing in the future - it can't hurt though.  I use the dental wipes - neither of mine will tolerate the tooth brush and I also got from my vet the protective gel that you put on each week.  I think some doglets are just prone to bad teeth, just like some adults are.  Brandy had to have 7 removed a few months ago.  You might start with the wipes and see how Cliffie tolerates and then progress to a brush if he will let you.  Massaging the gums is good and anything that helps clean off the tarter is good too.

Mike,

I don't know about preventing abcesses, but brushing does improve dental health.  I had to begin toothbrushing with Boonie at age 9.  It was a struggle for about a week, but he did get used to it.  And his kisses are so much sweeter now!

Hi Mike,

I've been a complete stranger on the boards lately, and just now read about Clifford's tooth ordeal.  So glad to hear that he's doing ok.  Have you decided to do regular teeth brushings?  Chilie doesn't mind getting her teeth brushed.  She likes the chicken flavored toothpaste!  Belly rubs to you, Clifford!

Mike

Oops, actually I forgot about brushing.  My bad....

Thanks for the belly rubs, Clifford never turns those down.

When is your next trip back here?

Mike,
I am so glad you posted about this, with pictures.  Porky woke two days ago with a lump in the same spot!!!  I remembered that someone had posted about their dog looking similar so i referred back to your post.  Then I took him in and sure enough he had the same problem!!   Porky was able to avoid getting his tooth removed though.  We caught it early enough that we could have it lanced open by the vet and then put peroxide on it daily till it went away.   Thankfully he is all healed up now.   Porky owes you a tooth for your post!!

I brush Porky's teeth daily and have since we got him at 6 weeks old, so I'm not sure that brushing will completely prevent it from happening again.   I hope both our pups keep those teeth shiny and absess free from now on!!!  Just thought Id share how much your post helped my Porky.
