Our little daxie has always had a bit of a constipation problem. Our vet recommended that we mix approx. 1 tbsp. of real pumpkin with her food. We have done so for years and it seems to work well and if we stopped for any length of time the same old problem would reoccur. She seems to really like it, it's quite funny any little bits will harden on the sides of the bowl by evening and she makes quite a racket licking it off the metal dish causing it to spin until she is satisfied she has gotten it all (at least 5 minues). Does anyone else use canned or fresh pumkin?

Pumkin is exellent to use for them. Just make sure it is just the pumkin--not the kind that is ready to use.

I have used it both for constipation and for the squirts to help firm up the stool.  As long as you used canned pumpkin and not pie filling - it should work !  Someone, I don't remember who would freeze it in ice cube trays and give for a period treat.

Glad it helps your furkid!!!  I like finding natural stuff that works for them !

Hallie has been on a tablespoon of pumpkin most of her life too. I would like her stools to be harder yet though so am trying to research what else I can add. I also used to give it to my cats regularly. I was shocked that they liked it.

When I was a kid we had a dog, Skippy, who was 1/2 doxie and 1/2 beagle...he had the body of a beagle but was red. His brother, Schnappsie Motsenbocker, lived next door to us. Schnappsie had the big beagle body but the little short doxie legs...he was rather comical looking to be quite honest! He had a tendency to be on the chubby side so he was fed pumpkin w/ his food every day to help keep him slim. He LOVED pumpkin. So much so that when the pumpkins and squash started to ripen in our garden he would come over and try to steal them! Not realizing that they were hooked to the vine! We used to watch him out the window and just laugh so hard watching him trying to cart off the pumpkins and squash!  :2funny:
Some day I hope to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am!!

My vet also recommended pumpkin as a "diet" food.  She said it's a good mix in to add to their regular food if you have a pleasantly plump dachshund (not that any of us have that problem with this breed  :2funny:)  It's bulky and doesn't add a lot of calories so it fills the little stinkers up.
