Conrad is out of surgery

I figured I would post here - a follow up from the postings on the other board...

The surgeon said that surgery went very well. He said that he was concerned during the surgery because there was massive compression over two vertabre, and he thought that might mean a bad outcome. Also, during the surgery, the radiologist who reads the slides from the MRI center (he is in WA, and they transmit the slides to him from VA) called the neurologist while Conrad was in surgery to ensure that the neuro had seen the slides - the radiologist wanted to let him know that he thought Conrad would need surgery urgently. Good thing he was already in there being worked on.

Anyway, following the surgery, the neuro did a status exam, and found that Conrad has very good sensation at this point. He said that when he squeezes Conrad's foot with the hemostat, there is not just a reaction, but a turn and a screech. That is a very, very good sign. He said that he thought it might have been an artifact of the anesthesia he received at the MRI center that caused the lack of reaction prior to the surgery.

I may not be able to visit Conrad until Monday. The emergency clinic is open 24 hours, but they typically do not allow visitors without the neuro staff present. The neuro staff is not usually there (except to round and/or perform surgeries) on the weekend.

Thank you again for your thoughts for my boy. I'm really feeling much better after talking to the neuro - he sounded very happy with the way things look at this point.

Rayzzz for Conrad on the way. Isn't this his second or third surgery? I may be thinking of Finn, too. Hoping for a speedy recovery. It sounds like he's in good hands with the doc.

Thanks, all. I went to visit him today. He is obviously painful from the surgery, but was very happy to see DFB and me. His doc said that he is showing some voluntary movement, and he made an attempt to give us a tail wag when he saw us. He really wants to come home, and is very tired, but seems to be in good spirits. Here he is with his "take me home, please" look perfected:

Mack: Yes, this was his third surgery. Finn has had two - one cervical and one lumbar.

Wow, I didn't get to check on you guys all weekend. I was reading all this with my heart in my throat. It sounds like going forward Conrad need to follow Elmer Fudd's advise and "be vewwy, vewwy quiet".
Rays continuing for as full a recovery as possible. AND tell Finn he is NOT to follow suit.

OH my! I just saw this! I have just recently gone through back surgery with Cajsa and she is at 3.5 weeks post op now so we are still in the recovery stage! I am so glad to hear he is doing better and that he is having sensations and some movement so quickly after surgery. That is a really good thing! I'll keep the rays coming from KY!
