Hello all!

New to the board.  I got my puppy for Christmas. She is a black and tan longhair mini. My question is about grooming. Dose she need to go to the groomers? We give her baths once every two weeks or so. We brush about every other day. Her hair is getting long. She is about 5 month old now.  Any info will be helpfull. Thanks in advance.

Hi Dan,

Keep up with the brushing, but I think you are bathing her too often.  Wait until she rolls in her first maggoty carcass  :eeew:  to bathe her next.  Too much soap will dry out her fur and her skin.  But establishing a bathing routine is certainly a good thing.

From my experience with longhairs, I wish I had established a foot fur cutting routine, as now it is very hard.  Those little  feeties sure track in the dirt.  About once a month I take  a regular man's beard groomer/clipper, and shave out underneath my LH's paws.  Then I trim her toes in the front to length.  Believe me, it NEVER looks professional.  If you want to pay for this service, you can.  Find a groomer who is friendly and one whose work area is CLEAN!

And don't forget those toenails!  It's easy to forget because with the long fur, their toenails might not make the tap dance sound on the floor, but they do need to be kept short.  Have the vet show ya how and do it at least every two weeks.  It's also good for the dog, as it is easy for them to slip on hardwood and tile floors, and the LAST thing you want is for them to twist their backs!
Hope this helps.

I take Buelah (my long hair girl) to the groomer on a monthly basis for her toenails and bath.  We live in Florida where summers are ridiculously hot so I have her cut very short during those months. I then let it grow over the winter months.  Buelah loves to swim so the short hair in the summer works well for her.

My longhaired girl is Brekke and she is bathed or showered about once a month.  I clean out her ears then, and blow dry her.  I also clean out her ears with a solution called Otic about once a week, too.  I try to clip toenails about every three weeks and brush her teeth every couple of days.  She did not get her full coat until she was three years old.  I clip out the fur between her toes and under her feet, plus I trim the "bits" under her tail to prevent the hair from collecting those unsavory "dingleberries".  I do brush her about every other day.

Some of my daxies get a bath a couple of times a year and some have never seen the inside of the bath tub yet.Latest puppy girls are now 7 1/2 months and have a fabbie bloom on their coats,1 is red the other black and cream.they have yet to be bathed and they are being showen.paws and claws are done weekly for the show team the others its monthly. The only one who needs anul glands done is the stud boy,Sam(casanova) and he has a tendency to have impacted glands.Ive found that bathing too often in longs leaves them with fluffy coats that take forever to rgain their lanolin.Oh forgot to say that Dinah dog the standard wire daxie has bathes when she rolls in fox poo.A regular occurance often is washed in the local stream. You know when she has rolled in muck as the rest of the gang wont go near her.

my dashs hair is getting long basically i just cut the hair in between the claws and any that is growing over them. i was bathing him every four weeks now the vet is saying that he had a skin infection two weeks ago could be to do with bathing him but when i bath him it seems to relieve him, i groom everyday but some days i don't have time so i only do his ears and tail.also i wud recommend cod liver oil tablets for every dash because it makes there coat really silky espically when your dogs hair is growing really fast. because my dash had really dry hair and know it is lovely and silky

when i got bruno (a longhair) i bathed him striaght away he gets bathed every month and brused 3 -4 times a week i was lucky that i trimmed in between his toes when he was young although one day he nipped me. but i have learnt if i sit down on the floor and lift him he is a lot more comfortable. i also when i am running a little bathe before i wash him i put it up near his ears and the amount of dead hair that comes  off. i am lucky because my step mother is a dog groomer although i have only ever used her once to clip his nails. bruno bites his nails himslef he has never bit them down to the quick but he chews them, i was chatting to the vet and she said it was nothing wrong he could be bored. but that as long as he didnt bite it down too much it was okay. i don;t know how he gets bored i dont work and i am with him 90percent of the day and he sleeps beside me as well dashies get bored so easily. :verdict:
