My husband and I took Lara to Sam's Club today to do a bit of shopping (some of it birthday shopping) and just to get out of the house.  We had a really good time there.  Lara was so good....she's always so good.  We ate lunch there, shopped, ordered a cute birthday cake, and just had fun.

Well, while we were in line checking out, Kelly was entertaining Lara by tossing her in the air and running around with her.  He was keeping her happy and occupied, since she was starting to get tired and was definitely ready for a nap.  Then this woman comes up to us and says, "You know, I'm probably sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, but.........did you know that what you're doing with your daughter can cause brain damage?"  I was like, what?!?!  My husband politely said, "No, I didn't realize that.  Thank you for your concern."  And she says, as she's walking back to her spot in line, "It's just that I'm an educator......"  Sooooo, what.....that entitles you to imply that my husband and I don't know how to take care of our own child?!?  :cussing: I couldn't even look at her.  I just rolled my eyes at the cashier, who gave me a weak smile back.  I was so pissed.  How dare she!?!  She had no right.  What nerve!

Anyway, just had to vent here.  You guys are my support and sanity!

No one likes to be told how to raise their children.  She was probably just concerned, especially with all the problems with shaken baby syndrome we see today.  It would be just like you seeing someone swinging a doxy around.  No matter how much fun the doxy thought it was, ....it would concern you

I seriously doubt she meant to give offense....and as for being an educator.....I shudder to think of the things they do see go wrong concerning their charges every day.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood

If throwing a baby in the air and catching it could cause brain damage, Meghan should have been in big trouble. That was Randy's favorite thing to do with her when she was little! I would feel the same way you would, I'm sure. I'm amazed that Kelly reacted so calmly.

All five of mine were thrown and caught and they are happy adults and a happy 11 year old!  Shaking is much different than throwing them up!  Be careful, my ex, threw one up into a ceiling fan once.  Thank God he wasn't hurt bad............we just were more careful.  Don't sweat the small stuff and love your kid!  Dottie

I think that is probably a good example of "consider the source".  Although I would have been livid!
Okay....I simply must ask.

AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO FOUND DOTTIE'S RESPONSE TO THIS POST TO BE ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS?
Dottie....thanks for the smile!  I needed it today!  I found my daughter playing on her trampoline directly under the ceiling fan when she was about five years old.  When I told her that we needed to move it she informed me that she wanted to see how close she if she could jump up that high!  Need I explain the premature gray hair?  :)

Well, that person is who they are.  Don't let anyone push your buttons.  If a wino curses at someone, they don't think twice.  If a friend does, they get upset.  Why?  Expectations.  Like Viktor Frankl wrote, between the stimulus and the response, there is a choice.  Easily said, hard to do. :o)

Hey Beth.....I am on your side 200%.  Unreal.  Can you even imagine saying that to someone?  I can see if he was hanging her upside down by her ankles for 5 minutes or something....but she was WAY out of line.  Hope it didnt' wreck your day.  And I know I shouldn't ask because I don't post as often as I should....but if you wanna e-mail me a picture of Lara I promise not to be mad.  LOLOLOL.

Beth, the only way doing that would cause brain damage would be if there was no head control (so the baby was a newborn pretty much) or if it was really violent/forceful and then she wouldn't be laughing.  I think I would've stopped her when she said "You know, I'm probably sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, but..." with "You're right you are."  That drives me nuts when people do that - when it is obvious no harm is being done.  Hope your day got better after that!
