Patches was spayed before having a heat cycle about 6 months old she is really fluffy hair some call a spay coat. ? Question if you do not spay a female until after the 1st heat cycle will they still get the fluffy spay coat ? Patches fluffy coat pick every leaf, piece of grass anything loose in the yard she brings it in in her coat. If I were to get another female long haired dachshund in the future can i do something to cut down on the fluffy coat. Thanks Papbouv

Our Sam has what I think you are calling a "fluffy coat". Our vet calls it a "puppy coat" and suggests we test his thyroid levels. Since he has absolutely no other symptoms we haven't done that. It does catch a lot of debris outside.

Do not think Patches coat would be a puppy coat she is 8 years old the hair or fur is very fine and fluffy but she has a strip of hair/fur down her back that is always been a different texture it is smooth and flat. Her hair/fur is fluffy on her chest and sides.the hair/fur on her ears is flat and silky same on her tail flip her over it is fluffy on her bellyall of her underside. Last year went to a dog show all the dachshunds seemed to have long flat coats looked silky.? Papbouv

Roberta

Where did my post go.............
Amy has a shoker of a undercoat................and she as you know had Ingrid so going through the first cycle does not help. Oliver has a slight fluff. The short hairs don't seem to have the problem, may depend on whose in their background.
Have you thought next time of a neutred male, as both my boys have been way smooker than the girls.
Thyroid problems usually have many symptoms, and the norm is hair lose, plus either excess weight gain or loss............Emma our first was a hypothyroid, I picked it up via symptoms, but I have worked in human biochemistry most of my life.
Our next we are in a quandary as we are not getting any younger and lifting them in and out of cars etc, but then we do not know what we would like instead.

Sam is 8 and they are still calling his a puppy coat. It's a much finer and softer texture than my other long hairs have had. It just doesn't want to lie flat -he always looks a little puffed up.

Brekke is 12 and a half, and her "spay" coat means she is one of the hairiest longhairs most people have ever seen.  She manages to bring in about a cup of debris a day when my backyard tree - a Chinese elm - drops leaves and seed pods from November to late January.  It has been worse this year than ever before, so I had it cut down on Tuesday.  Her coat is very fine and I call her "fluffy, not stuffy".  I can control it somewhat by using  "Unicoat" by Gold Medal Pets - and it's a good thing I have two bottles, since I haven't seen it in stores for about 3 months...

Last year first time I did  take Patches to the groomer had he shaved down except left her ears and tail alone it did not change her coat structure at all still came back fluffy as ever. It seemed to really help her not dragging in the back yard. She seemed a lot cooler too may just do that once a year right before summer then it will be grown out for winter since our winter is back full force have not had a winter for 2 years. Patches has coats I can put on her if need be so she will not freeze the one coat covers her belly so that cuts down on all the debris from the back yard. Thanks for all the reply's  would have to wait til Buddy is no longer with us before getting a male cannot have a male anything Doberman's are known for their same sex aggression. The vet thinks Buddy has Wobblers ? his only symptoms are a shiver and a low whine different from his talk whine I have pain pills for him but he runs around like a fool does not act any different except for the two symptoms sometimes wish they could talk. Papbouv (how about rams for the dachshunds to get into the car if lifting is a problem. ?)
