This works for any age dog 6 weeks to adult any age the key to it is patience & consistency get a 6 ft lead take pup / dog out every hour for young pups or un house broken dogs go to the area you want them to use as their potty area. You stand still the pup/ dog can sniff around all they want to you can encourage them by using the same phrase  go potty, hurry up any phrase you want but you must use the same phrase each time & everyone else in the house breaking team if  you have help.If the pup/ dog goes potty PRAISE act like it it is the greatest thing you ever saw. With Pups or dogs either take them out after playing, naps, eating, drinking 1st thing in the morning last thing at night, every 2 hours more often if a young pup since they have no control as yet. You can also hang a bell on the door that leads to the potty area you ring it at first until the pup / dog gets the idea may take a few days or weeks then they will learn to ring the bell. Yes sometimes they do ring it just to go out and play bark at the leaves or grass but it is just a phase they may go though. OK if they do not go when you take them out you crate them or tie them to you so they cannot sneak off to go somewhere in the house. If they do have a accident do not say anything to them just clean it up with a Pet enzyme product this is very important you must try to get all scent up from where they went its like a calling card to go back to that spot.Yes if it seems that your fur kid just is not getting the concept you can take a paper towel wipe up the accident and take it out to the potty area so their smell will be out there.Any time a pup or dog has an accident take a rolled up newspaper hit your self on the head for not taking them out the more, accidents you have the longer it will take. This will work even with kennel dogs watch for sniffing around  crate or tie them to you so they cannot sneak away.  Ok for persons that are dealing with marking behaviors or peeing when excited multi males you will have more problems I recommend belly bands until you can work though the problem.Marking is a house breaking problem go back to house breaking one o one for excited dogs that pee they will usually out grow it. For the excited dog ignore the peeing the more you get up set about it the worse it can get. Yes it is difficult but it can be done ( Patches my Doxie peed on my DIL foot every time she saw her for about 2 years) Excited pee dogs can wear diapers or belly band if you do not wish to clean up after them all of the time but I would only use it as a last resort. Example of one of my dogs marking teenage male Bouvier des Flanders raising leg to pee on chair I walked around the corner had a towel in my hand I popped him in the butt escorted him out into the back yard telling him off all the way he never marked again. You have to make them think their world is coming to an end and really not do anything to them maybe raise your voice. Also NILF dog training is a big help you can google it. NILF shows the dog you are in charge with out any harm to the dog at all . Good Luck
