This is Earl.........I did a major big time no-no this morning!  And, I was doing so good.......I slipped back into my old ways after being a good boy for a while when both Mom and Dad leave.  I know Mom was upset but she didn't get mad at me.  She knows that I don't mean to do it, it just happens.

Dee here:  Earl did do a major no-no today and he had been doing so well the past few weeks.  Dave and I went to meet youngest son and all the kids to have breakfast to celebrate Wil's birthday which is today.  We were gone for two and a half hours.  I have started to block the three so they only have access to the dining room/kitchen area.  I do have two older upholstered chairs in the dining room by the window with their doggie-perch in between.  Well........one of the chairs is now minus the fabric and stuffing on one side!  He shredded it.....there was fabric and stuffing all over!  Now, I am definitely going to have the chairs re-upholstered and in the meantime, the chairs have been switched so the shredded side is against the wall.  He did a huge number on it....not a small area, it's large!  After cleaning up the mess, I went to PetSmart and purchased a crate......that is now going to be his "safe place" when we both leave the house.  I have it set up and both he and Duggie are going in and out of it.  Earl went in and and laid down for a while....I shut the door and he didn't fuss.  I tried to have him in the kitchen only but he climbed the gate and the x-pen so that didn't work.    I should have known that he was heading down the path to be a not so good boy.......he was so full of being a little "devil" this morning before we left.  He definitely keeps me on my toes.

Oh dear, Earl!  You are really testing your mommy and papa, aren't you?  I sure hope you get right back into Good Boy mode very quick!

Dee, I think the crate idea might be the ticket for you.  I've heard you have to introduce it slowly and as a purely positive spot to spend time.  Sounds like he's starting out liking the "safe place".  If you aren't already, I've heard that if you feed them in the crate, they'll associate positive feelings toward it.  Hope this is the end of the destructive JD on the part of our dear Earl.  :thumb:

Crates are excellent sure cheaper than having to pay for a surgeon to remove stuffing if it does not pass from you dogs tummy.Patches is 3 years old she is always crated when we leave she is also a trash dog gets in the trash when we leave.Crates also give you peace of mind while you are gone.

Kathleen

Sounds like he might already be crate trained, if he already went in to rest there.  That would make life easier for everyone.  Mine are all crate trained, but I rarely have to use them since I moved in with my parents. They're both retired, so doggies get plenty of time with them and lots of supervision.

Here is scoop, Parker.....I have lots and lots of toys I could destuff......but the chair was more fun!   At least it wasn't the newer, more expensive furniture!  Mom gots these two chairs from the neighbors for chump change....under $20 for both.......so I just figured it was one big toy!  I've been a really good boy since yesterday......well, all three of us got on Mom's nerves this morning....we was all arguing among ourselves (Sarge, Duggie and I)......Mom was ready to run away from home.  Then we decided, we had better behave!  Earl

SNKSMOMSUE

One time, when I was little I tried to chew may way under the bedroom door.  I ate the padding and the carpet and some of the door - and threw it up and ate some more......Dad said he was going to send me to the pound if I did it again.  I don't know what the pound is, but he was MAD.  I think you better do some big time nice guy stuff for a few days.  Me and SBD have a crate, we are always in it when mom and dad aren't home.  The trick is the treat.  Gotta have a treat when you go in the kennel.  Our favorite is Carvers.  They taste like Mom's chicken.  If we don't get Carvers we revolt!  Mom and Dad never run out anymore.  Fair is fair right?  If I have to be good I need a reason.  Maybe that's why you did it - you didn't have a reason NOT to.  Hmmmm.  I will have my Mom call your Mom and make sure that you are getting treated in the manner which you so rightfully deserve.     In the mean time, give lots of kisses and turn on the "looks".    P.S. Stuffed chairs iz over-rated.

EARL, honey..... *shaking head*.   You sound like Toby River's twin brother

Dee - I feel your pain. Toby is the same way.  I thought that over time he would "learn" to be out like the others while I am gone - but he just freaks out and is so anxious.  He stays in his pen during the day or if I have to run an errand.  I try to get all my errands done during the week, so I don't normally leave on the week ends - but sometimes I have to !!!  I give him Rescue Remedy any time he goes in the pen.  Someday I will replace the chewed up door jamb by the garage door where I go out, and have replaced quite a few mini blinds already  :doah:

I just think he feels better about being contained and then he can relax and just sleep......

Toby doesn't love his pen, but settles down when he has to be in it...... Keeping good thoughts that Earl does fine in his !!!!

He seems to like his crate.....he is in it now laying down (with the door open when we are here).  I did a test run this morning, when I took Sarge to the vet for boosters and nail trim.  Dave was home....he cried when we left, so Dave told him to be nice and he just laid down.  I also have plugged in a diffuser called Comfort Zone near the crate...it covers an area of 650 square feet.  It is suppose to emit a comforting scent that Mama dogs have to aid in the comfort of puppies.  It's suppose to help with anxiety, barking, etc.  I just got it so we'll see how it works....said it could take up to two-three weeks to really notice a difference.  But I have noticed a more calming affect on the three boys.  So, I have my fingers crossed.  I tried the gate across the kitchen.....Earl climbed over it.  So that doesn't work.  I believe the crate will be the answer for us with Earl.  Sarge and Duggie are very well behaved when we are gone....they just curl up in their beds and blankies and go to sleep.   I can relate to the chewed door jamb....I have the corner of a cupboard that Earl chewed....

Rudy-angel was always a voracious chewer.  He ruined shoes, furniture, carpeting, blankets.   I think you might even remember when he ate a piece of polyester blanket that needed to be surgically removed.  From what I was told, the chewing was a result of being taken away from his mother prematurely, which is probably SOP with puppy mill dogs like Rudy-angel was.   Crating Earl is probably the best and safest course of action for everyone involved.

Our mum did buyed a metal fenz and makes it awound us wen she goes away and eben makes us sweep inside ov it. Oh my. Earl it's a good thing you already have your mom and dad wrapped around your cute little paw or you could find yourself back out on the street! Good idea of your Mom to get you a crate that should help keep you out of trubble.

Dee I don't know if this will make you feel any better but here is what Hallie did to my van seat the other day! Good thing she and Earl are too far away to be in cahoots!

DeeDee, I can't believe that the Princess did that!  Wow!  I've attached two pictures of the chair which Earl did in on Saturday morning....one shows where I have taped it up and the other is what we came home to....with stuffing all over!  The chair right now has the damaged side against the wall until I can get them redone.  What day did Hallie decide to tear through the seat?  Maybe Earl and Hallie communicated without us knowing it!  Earl doesn't mind the crate....however, today he is doing a small pout probably because all three of them (all separately and not together) made a trip to the vet's....Sarge for boosters and nail trim; Duggie for boosters; and Earl for a nail trim.  When I got home with Earl, he started the pout as soon as we pulled in the driveway....he didn't want to get out of the car......and then he came in and hid from me!  All three are sleeping now.

Wholly Cow Dee!!! That is major damage!! I can just imagine your face when you saw that (and Earl's face right after that!). Surely he will grow up soon and out of this phase....at least he did it on the back where it can be put against a wall in the meantime.

Oh I'm sorry I was just joking about the seat!  :angel4: That was done by my friends Pit Bull...that is her van, passenger side, the drivers seat is even worse. I could'nt believe it when I saw it, it's just another day in the life for her LOL. Hallie would never chew up anything, that is why she has over 160 toys, she is appalled when she sees other puppers doing that and she puts on her hall monitor hat!

I thought, Wow, Hallie did that??  I just couldn't imagine the Princess doing that! I'm relieved!  Maybe she should be the hall monitor for Earl!  Sarge tries to keep him in line but when it comes to tearing up things, Sarge and Duggie go the other direction....away from the trouble!!  Earl gave me the L@@K when we got home....like I tried to be good but it just didn't work, Mom. He has the sad look with the white of his eyes down real well!!  I couldn't get mad at him but he was the perfect angel for the remainder of the day and stayed right by me.  Needless to say, I made the trip to PetSmart and he now has a crate that he will go into when we both go away or we are both outside working on whatever, and the dogs need to stay inside (which doesn't happen very often).  What's funny, is I made a comment to Dave on the way home wondering if we would walk in the house and have it clean or if Earl managed to do something!  A look of shock was on my face........he had been doing so well......something triggered him and raised his anxiety level....hence the poor chair took it in the pants!

Dee Dee, you had me going.  Like, WHOA!  Hallie sweet princess could NEVER do THAT!   I was shocked.  Glad you cleared it all up.

Dee, YIKES!  Earl really went to town on your chairs.  He'll get used to the crate, just wait and see.

As you all know I have Buddy the Doberman they have the nick name of Dober goats quite a few have died eating stuff they should not some have had surgery in the $3,000.00 - and up range. I have read where Dobergoats have eaten chairs, drywall, stuffies, counters, carpet, underwear, kids mittens, you name it they have eaten it.
Here at my house we are in the poor bracket so Buddy was crated until he was 2 years and 4 months old to make sure he would not destroy anything in the house. He now can be loose in the house but Patches still has to be crated she will not give up her trash ways, plus safer since Buddy is so big and Patches is so little. Lov them crates.Papbouv

Wow - Dee!  I am shocked that Earl did such damage to your "dump prevention" chair!  (And DeeDee - I am glad I kept reading, because I was having a hard time believing that Hallie could do all that to a bench seat!)  I think I will be happy that I only have toy de-stuffers!  :xfinger:

I don't even know how I got into this mess, :thinik:  my Mom is the one who needs the lawyer she made it look like I was bad when all I was doing was snoozing in my bed. I mean really, Mom has to break a biscuit up into tiny pieces before I'll eat it, I would never put my teefies on that dirty fabric and stuff. There is a reason I have over 150 babies...I never tear them up. She was just tryin' to make Earl's mom feel better by showing a pit bull mauled car seat but after seeing the photo of the chair, we think Earl could hold his own against any pit bull! Hee. Now if he chews his way out of his crate...he will be awarded the Golden Fang Award!

When "someone" ate my mercedes car door interior leather I had to turn to forensics to find the perp!! I used calipers to measure the interdental width of the bite marks made by the canine teeth and compared it with the two suspects. It soon became clear that the usual suspect was to blame LOL. However since there was no corroborating evidence the perp (dearest Holly angel) was released with a warning and an exclusion order served so that neither of the suspects were allowed within one meter of the car leather.

Interestingly, since then and the untimely loss of Holly angel, further damage occured to the new leather interior (ahem 750 GB pounds per door plus fitting at the garage - thank heavens for ebay and big brothers with glue guns). The perp was caught in the act this time - Mr T went berserk when he was inside the car one frosty morning and I made the mistake of scraping the ice off - he went nutso on the leather leaving his teeth marks deeeeeeep into the door (I did remeasure the marks and his intercanine width and confirmed on this occasion it was definitely him but concluded that he had been possessed by the spirit of Holly momentarily and he got off then on grounds of temporary insanity).

Sigh......then along came Ivy. No car door chewing yet, she isn't being given the chance!!!!
