Last night, Koby started acting lethargic and not his chipper self.  Was whining a little bit and staying in one spot.  Walking slow around the house.  We are thinking that Koby is a little stressed.  Since last night he had diarrhea and vomited once. So off the the emergency vet last night as a precaution (worried daddy).  The doctor thinks that it is a combination of the stress of the move, the new environment, change of diet, and possible reaction to his yearly vaccinations.  So they took his temperature, gave him an injection of Pepcid, a subcutanious fluid injection (keep him hydrated) and put him on a GI anti-inflammatory pill.  We have to feed him bland food (hamburger and rice and the likes).  Julie got up last night to check on him and let him out and this morning he is wagging his tail and wanted in the big bed with his sister, Tiff and foster-kin Sgt and Libby.

Think that he will be back to 100% by tomorrow evening, hoping that he feels better.     Koby needs some rays his way.

Those who have experience with taking in foster puppers....is this common for them to be stressed and develop upset stomaches?
I am applying common human experience with displacement and new surroundings and think that this may be the reason why he isn't 100%.

Rays on the way for the Koblette......I would have to say YES to the upheaval in his life and the stress factor.  Although his previous life wasn't the best - it is still a huge change for them both.  And a much richer one too....which will cause overindulgence and overload !!!  What a good foster daddy and mommy.....they couldn't have lucked out any better.  Please keep us posted !

If later on you're still having problems with Koby&Tiff contact my friend Sue at buttercup64836@yahoo.com.She works with Dachshund Rescue of North America and has dealt with fosters.

Absolutely the change causes this.
Dottie has stomach problems and
any time I leave her with my mom
she has an episode of stomach upset
by the time I get home.  She is so
pitiful, shaking, not eating & at worst
vomiting & diarreah.  So now I start
the sulfer drug the day before I leave
to help her.
The diet & meds will help him a great deal.

When Patches joined us last year, he suffered with the same types of problems.  His foster mom warned us that he might have an upset tummy after the long trip from Ohio and the stress of a new family.  Took about a week for him to settle down and get used to the new routine, food and family.  Our Vet prescribed much of the same thing that yours did...

Just keep an eye on him and he should be fine within the week!

Poor little boy. It does sound like it could be the stress. Their little lives have been turned upside down, too bad they can't realize it's only going to be wonderful for them from here on out. When I first got Hallie and Sophie and the other little boy from the shelter, Hallie had tummy upsets even though she seemed to be having fun. You guys are angels for these two, :angel4: thank you!!! Let us know how he is doing. How are they otherwise, are they getting along with your two and are they pottying outside ok?

Yes it happens a lot with fosters. Especially ones that were raised by one person and then suddenly displaced. I also see it a lot in ones that their owners died. Which I am sure that Koby thinks that's what happened to Jarrett. Why else would he basically abandon him?

If it happens again, take a sample to the vet to rule out parasites, etc.  But I am betting 100% it is stress-related from the change, and also, from having to find his place in the new pack.  Assure him that you hoomans are  the Alphas, so there is NO confusion there.  That should add a lot of security to his little world.

Sounds like a stress induced reaction.   I'd still have him checked out to rule out other items, though.

When I adopted Max nearly 13 years ago, he already knew me, and he was familiar with Rudy.  Even with those factors going with him, he was still affected by the change.   Once he realized he was not going back "home" again, he sunk into a "doggie depression" for a couple of months.  Eventually he adjusted to his new surroundings and never looked back.   Surprisingly, even after Rudy passed, we've seen little sign of distress on Max's part.  He adapted to the change of being without Rudy more readily than he changed his house.   Maybe he knew long before we did that Rudy was heading on a journey.

Just a thought, but I wonder if Koby doesn't need a little more crate time, after all, he is used to being in it most of the time.

It probably is stress related.  I know with Cajsa that her bowels would flare up if she got stressed even if we were with her.  Chicken and rice for a few days would generally do the trick for her.
It may also be a good idea to leave the crate down so they can get in it when ever they want.  It could be his "safe place" if he's feeling overwhelmed with all the new stuff.  When we travel I always take Cajsa's crate and set it out so she has access to it an deven if she doesn't sleep in it she sees it and knows she *can* go there if she wants.  It has helped with her.
