I have asked some friends who send me birthday gifts, to send in a donation instead. I had wanted to use the study being done at UC Davis by Dr. Neff who was trying to find the gene responsible for IVDD but he unfortunately has left UC Davis and the study. :( But there is another study where they are trying to find a link between the gene that causes our doxies short legs and IVDD. I am not trying to get anyone to donate here but thought you'd find the info interesting, I am praying someone does find a gene and that when they do, the breeders will take heed and breed carefully. It could make a big difference in the suffering our kids often have to endure. (I'd love to be on a team researching something like this if I only had half a brain LOL).

Dear Dee Dee,

I understand that you’re interested in the genetic aspect of the disease.  Dr. Danika Bannasch is working on the underlying gene that causes short legs in dachshunds which she believes predisposes them to IVDD.  If you would like to direct your friends to contribute to her research, I would suggest that they make a check payable to the “UC Regents"CCAH” with a cover note that it’s for “genetic research to benefit dachshunds, currently under the direction of Dr. Bannasch.”  They can send it to my attention at the address below.

Thanks for this information Dee Dee!!   Wouldn't it be great if they could find this gene and we'd be able to save our babies before they started having back problems.
