I have a friend with a golden with seizures and she just started him on Zonisamide. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this drug and what you thought of it?

I had an Australian Shepherd with epilepsy. At first, we waited to see if it was idiopathic or a regular occurrence.  We eventually put him on phenobarbital because he started having seizures at least once a week. The medication eventually destroyed his liver so we had to euthanize him at age 4.  I know that for people at least, the anti-seizure drugs have come a long way, but I don't know if dogs respond to the newer less harmful meds the same as people.

I have not heard of the medication that you are referencing but I would google it to see what you can find out about it.

That is terrible I'm so sorry...only 4! Rusty is already 11 and has had a few small seizures since he was young but this recent one was his first big one and now he's had a second only not quite as bad. The med she said is a newer one for humans and not supposed to be quite as bad but of course all meds have side effects and risks. I did google it but didn't find much and the ones on forums mentioning it that always scares the pants off you because usually only the worst cases seek out forums. I was hoping to find some positive things about it to pass on to my friend. Thanks for your info I'm glad he's not on the phenobarbital.
